Mired in an eight-game losing streak, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls' basketball team finished the regular season on a positive note with a 57-32 win at Harris-Lake Park on Feb. 9.
The Hawks scored the first 10 points and led 14-6 at the end of the first quarter. H-M-S then scored 19 unanswered points before the Wolves made a late basket to make the half time score 33-8.
"We were able to push the ball after we got rebounds. We got some pretty good looks at the basket," said Hawk coach Lester Tessum.
H-LP scored six straight points early in the third quarter while H-M-S scored the final four to make the score 47-18. The Hawks led by as many as 30 points late in the game.
Scoring leaders were Lydia Harders with 17 points, Taya Mason with 12, Jasmine Lux with eight, Emily Mutombo with six and Emily Otto with five.
Leading rebounders were Harders, Lux and Mason with five each, Darby Mastbergen with four, and Paige Gehrke and Otto with three. Harders also came up with seven steals and Elise Haack had three steals and two assists.
H-M-S improved its final War Eagle Conference record to 3-7.
The Wolves (0-20) were led in scoring by Zella Ingham with 16 points.
