Swine building ventilation workshop March 15 near Sutherland
Pork producers can learn more about building ventilation from the inside out by attending a “Managing Your Unseen Employee: The Ventilation System” workshop offered at no cost by the Iowa Pork Industry Center and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.
According to Brett Ramirez, assistant professor in agricultural and biosystems engineering at ISU, the daylong program provides a two-pronged approach to understanding issues and consequences of decisions by combining classroom instruction with hands-on trials and application of knowledge gained in a real-world setting.
“Session content is divided into three categories delivered classroom style and a fourth that provides hands-on learning,” he said. “In that final portion, attendees will be able to see and feel the impacts that design, maintenance and management can have on various ventilation practices through the use of Iowa State’s 24-foot mobile Swine Ventilation Trailer.”
A workshop will be held Monday, March 15, at Northwest Research and Demonstration Farm, 6320 500th Street, Sutherland. A similar workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, March 16, at Iowa Lakes Community College, 3200 College Drive, Emmetsburg.

Story Walk is March 6
Local families with preschool and elementary-aged youth are invited to participate in a family Story Walk on Saturday, March 6 at the South Park Mall in Spencer. The event is free to participate in and registration is not needed.
Families are encouraged to visit the mall any time between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Once they pick up a goodie bag at the front entrance, they can walk through the mall at their own pace reading an EGG-cellent story and learning about eggs and agriculture.
“A Story Walk is a path with story sections posted along the way to engage families in literacy activities while learning about a subject – in this case, eggs – and while moving throughout the community,” said Amy Forrette, Clay County K-12 Educator with ISU Extension and Outreach, in a news release. “We hope that this Story Walk will give families an opportunity to connect with each other, as well as local resources and businesses in the community.”
Any questions can be directed to Forrette at (712) 262-2264 or [email protected].
