• Passing semi strikes vehicle

A passing tractor/semi-trailer struck a vehicle on U.S. 59/Silver Avenue on Feb. 18 at 5:54 a.m.

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that Dawn Ann Koch, 44, of Primghar, was driving a 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix north in the 4200 mile of Silver Avenue, and Eugene G. Vlahakis, 55, of Orland Park, Ill., was also northbound in a 2019 Peterbilt. Vlahakis estimated his speed at 55 mph and Koch’s at 20 mph. As the Koch vehicle entered the highway, Vlahakis was fully committed to passing when he observed a signal light come on. He moved the Peterbilt to the outside portion of the lane when Koch began to turn left at 4247 Silver Avenue. The Peterbilt struck the rear driver’s side of Koch’s vehicle.

Neither driver initially reported being injured; however, Koch later stated she had a cracked tooth and a bump on her head. She refused treatment but stated she would seek medical attention on her own.

Damage to the Grand Prix was estimated at $2,500. According to the report the semi-trailer was partially loaded with liquid nitrogen, but law enforcement and an Iowa DOT officer confirmed that no hazardous material had leaked. Damage to the semi owned by Southern Pines Trucking, of Aliquippa, Pa., was estimated at $10,000.
