1996: ISU names Harson as Outstanding Teacher

• March 14, 1946

In the second game of the girls’ state basketball tournament, Hartley lost a close contest with Guthrie Center, 29-27. Hartley’s usually strong offense was held in check by the Guthrie Center girls, pre-tournament defensive favorites. Amy Brehmer, high scorer of the 1944 state tournament, was held to 11 points.

With the close of Saturday night’s business the Swanson Grocery ceased operating in the Fick building. That location was taken over by Herm Fick, former Hartley grocery man. The Swansons planned to reopen their store as soon as possible in a new location.

The school election in Hartley appeared on the surface to be a quiet affair with a single candidate having filed for the vacancy on the board, the incumbent Dr. E. Pfeiffer. However, a group working behind the scenes mustered enough votes on a write-in ballot to elect A. Bartelson by a margin of 91-55.

• March 11, 1971

A meeting between Spencer Foods, Inc. and Local 440 of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butchers Workmen of North America, of Hartley, was held at Spencer. The meeting began at 1 p.m. and lasted until evening. Spencer Foods had no comment on the negotiations and no further meetings were planned in the immediate future.

Four Hartley students received high scores in the competition for the Drake Physics Award. All four placed in the upper half of the 443 students representing 84 schools. Hartley entrants were Rick Arends, Mark Sherman, Bob Buddingh and Ken Meerdink.

Mrs. Betty Meyer, Director of Nursing Service Administration at Hartley Community Memorial Hospital, completed a seminar which was conducted for 30 persons responsible for administering nursing service in Iowa’s hospitals. Participants in the 50-hour program attended 10 all-day sessions.

The I.E.F. Club and Y’adnom Club donated monetary gifts to help fund the purchase of a baby changing table for the women’s restroom at the Hartley Community Center. The Y’adnom Club along with American Legion Auxiliary Unit #288 also donated funds to the park board to assist with the purchase of play equipment for the city park.

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn High School science teacher Donald Harson was recognized for being named a 1996 Outstanding Teacher by Iowa State University. He was nominated for the award by a previous H-M-S student.

Qualifying H-M-S seniors were eligible to participate in an early release/late arrival program during the fourth nine weeks. The plan was developed by the student council and approved by the board of directors.
