Sprint medley team picks up win at Unity Christian
The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls' track and field team competed twice last week, at the Unity Christian Coed Invitational on April 12 at Northwestern College in Orange City, and at the Spencer Girls' Invitational on April 16 at Spencer.
At Unity Christian, the Hawks began the meet with a win in the sprint medley relay. The team of Emily Mutombo, Anna Vander Veen, Abby Otto and Jasmine Lux took first place in a time of 2:01.02.
In addition, the Hawks recorded four runner-up finishes. Individually, Mutombo was second in the 200 meter dash (:29.18) and Vander Veen was runner-up in the 400 meter hurdles (1:16.90). Also finishing second were the 4x800 relay team of Madison Otto, Vander Veen, Lydia Harders and Lux (11:20.72), and the distance medley relay team of Mutombo, Abby Otto, Lux and Madison Otto (4:52.16).
Finishing fourth was Lexi Croatt in the 3,000 meter run (13:06.73). In fifth place were Madison Otto in the 1,500 meter run (6:04.14) and Harders in the 400 meter dash (1:11.63). The 4x100 relay of Mutombo, Harders, Abby Otto and Lux was sixth (:57.49).
Team scores were: MOC-Floyd Valley 168, Unity Christian 160, Western Christian 85, Storm Lake 61, H-M-S 51, Trinity Christian 28, West Sioux 16 and Whiting 2.
H-M-S JV results included: 100 – Hailey Grotluschen, sixth, :17.81; 800 – Kya Christopherson, fifth, 3:28.03; 1500 – Jocelyn Abonce, fourth, 7:23.94; and Juliana Pasillas, fifth, 7:47.13.
At Spencer, highlights for H-M-S included second- and third-place finishes in the 400 meter dash by Lux (1:04.10) and Abigail Otto (1:07.27). Madison Otto placed third in the 3000 meter run (12:42.37) and Croatt finished fourth (12:44.53).
Otto and Croatt also finished fourth (5:5.34) and sixth (6:04.02), respectively, in the 1,500 meter run.
The team of Mutombo, VanderVeen, Abby Otto and Lux came in fourth in the sprint medley relay (2:02.26), and Mutombo, Emily Otto, Abby Otto and Lux finished fourth in the 4x100 relay (:56.23).
Mutombo placed fourth in the 100 meter dash (:14.15), and Vander Veen finished fifth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:21.39).
Team results were: Spencer 195, Emmetsburg 78, Okoboji 69.5, Sioux Central 66.5, Estherville-Lincoln Central 65.5, H-M-S 43, Storm Lake 35.5 and Sheldon 35.
JV results were: 200 – Grotluschen, sixth, :33.81; and 400 – Kayla Kathman, sixth, 1:29.30.
Hawk coach Nicole Dorhout feels the squad had some bright spots.
"Lexi Croatt has been improving tremendously in the 3,000. She continues to get better and better," Dorhout said. "The sprint medley team has consistently placing, and Jasmine Lux and Abigail Otto have been sprinting well. Anna Vander Veen has stepped up in the hurdles and shown some real grit."
The Hawks are preparing for their own H-M-S Coed Relays on Friday, April 23. Fans are encouraged to come out and see the action. Field and running events begin at 4:30 p.m.
