Vaccine numbers top big milestone in Iowa

The number of completed COVID-19 vaccinations in Iowa surpassed 1 million during the past week.

As of Tuesday evening, 1,112,217 Iowans had either received their second shot of the two-dose vaccine or the one-dose shot. That figure was up from 999,451 the previous week. According to the state data, 269,581 Iowans had received one dose of either the two-shot Moderna or Pfizer vaccines.

Locally, Clay County had initiated 684 vaccine series and completed 7,027, while O'Brien County had initiated 668 series and completed 4,226. O'Brien County and Clay County had administered 225 and 78 doses, respectively, of the one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Local COVID-19 positivity rates remained relatively unchanged during the past week. O'Brien County's seven-day number increased from 3 percent on April 27 to 4 percent on May 4, while Clay County's positivity rate decreased from 3 percent to 2 percent over that same time period. Statewide numbers increased from 3.8 percent to 4.2 percent.

Coronavirus-related deaths remained unchanged in O'Brien County at 60 and 25 in Clay County. Statewide fatalities jumped from 5,930 last week to 5,960 this week.

Confirmed infections since the pandemic began tallied 2,139 in O'Brien County, 2,252 in Clay County and 395,910 statewide. Recoveries in that same order were 1,881, 2,036 and 349,013.

As of Sunday, there were 179 coronavirus-related hospitalizations in Iowa, which was unchanged from the previous week. Neither O'Brien County nor Clay County reported any hospitalizations.
