A game of ups and downs

H-M-S golfers struggle in meet with Gehlen Catholic

The Willow Creek course at LeMars proved to be the toughest foe for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in a War Eagle Conference golf meet with Gehlen Catholic on May 4.

The H-M-S girls fell to Gehlen Catholic, 212-263. The venue was a contributor to the Hawks’ struggles against the home team.

“The LeMars course proved to be our toughest challenge of the year. We got in trouble too often with the water,” Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese said.

Elise Haack’s 59 was the best round of the day for H-M-S. Other varsity results were Kinsey Schirmer 64, Emily Sindt 67, Elle Mastbergen 73, Megan Ten Kley 86 and Darby Mastbergen 88.

JV players Alexis Grover and Emma Schmillen finished with scores of 71 and 72, respectively.

“Even though our scores weren’t the best, we know as a team that it’s a game of ups and downs,” Kroese said. “We talk regularly about mindset and understanding that we have to have a short memory when things don’t go as expected.”

All four medalists were from Gehlen Catholic, led by Jayden Barthole with a 48.

• Boys also fall to Jays

The Hawk boys also saw their scores rise during the meet with Gehlen Catholic. H-M-S lost to the Jays, 191-219.

Ben Haack led the Hawks with a 50, which was good for fourth among the meet medalists. Other scores for H-M-S were Wyatt Borden 54, Nick Bronstad 57, Keith DeBoer 58, Samuel Heyn 59 and Lucas Kroese 63.

Dylan Barthole and Dawson Barthole both finished with rounds of 46 to top the medalist list.

Both H-M-S golf teams enter postseason play during the coming week. More details can be found elsewhere in this issue of The Sentinel-News.
