Hawks finish fifth in WEC meet; fourth at South O'Brien
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn did not have any champions but three individuals contributed runner-up performances during the War Eagle Conference track and field meet. The Hawk boys finished fifth in the meet that was held in Hartley on May 4.
Connor Dodd placed second in the 100 meter dash (:11.27), Kooper Ebel was second in the 400 meter dash (:52.85) and Noah Adams was second in the long jump (20'4").
Other individual place finishers for H-M-S were Ethan Diehm, long jump, fourth (19'2.5"); Dodd, 200 meter dash, fourth (:23.14); Dawson Schiphoff, 100 meter dash, sixth (:11.97); and Ebel, 200 meter dash, sixth (:24.47).
The Hawks placed fourth in fourth relays: 4x100 – Adams, Ebel, Schiphoff, Dodd, :45.46; 4x200 – Adams, Ryan Borden, Schiphoff, Dodd, 1:37.18; 4x800 – Diehm, Travis Kamradt, Brenton Thomas, Bryce Dodge, 9:36.0; and 800 sprint medley – Adams, Schiphoff, Borden, Ebel, 1:40.61. Borden, Kamradt, Diehm and J.P. Mutombo added a sixth-place finish in the 4x400 relay (3:54.53).
Unity Christian won the 2021 War Eagle Conference boys' track and field team title with 114 points. Close behind the Knights were Gehlen Catholic with 110 points and West Sioux with 108.
The remaining team scores were MMCRU 68, H-M-S 51, Hinton 48, South O'Brien 32, Akron-Westfield 28, Harris-Lake Park 15, Trinity Christian 9 and Remsen St. Mary's 4.
• Fourth at Wolverine Relays
H-M-S finished fourth in the boys' standings at the Wolverine Relays, hosted by South O'Brien on May 6 at Paullina.
Unity Christian claimed the team title with 183 points, with South O'Brien coming in second with 121. There was a tight battle for the next three places in the standings. Sioux Central scored 88 points, H-M-S finished with 82 and Alta-Aurelia had 78.
Individual finishers in the field events were: Noah Adams, long jump, first, 20'10.5"; Ethan Diehm, long jump, third, 19'10.75"; Gabe Bronstad, shot put, third, 40'; Adam Schierholz, discus, third, 110'7"; and Jesse Garcia, shot put, sixth, 37'8.5".
Running event place-finishers were: Ryan Borden, 100 meter dash, third, :12.29; Brenton Thomas, 400 meter hurdles, third, 1:03.38; Dawson Schiphoff, 100 meter dash, fourth, :12.44; JP Mutombo, 200 meter dash, fifth, :26.32; and Mutombo, 400 meter dash, sixth, :58.36.
Relay finishes included: 4x200 – Adams, Kooper Ebel, Schiphoff, Connor Dodd, second, 1:34.41; 4x400 – Borden, Travis Kamradt, Dodd, Ebel, second, 3:36.47; 800 meter sprint medley – Adams, Schiphoff, Dodd, Ebel, second, 1:41.36; 4x800 – Aiden Espeland, George Vargas, Tommy Den Hartog, Mitchell Meyers, fourth, 11:31.94; 1600 meter distance medley – Thomas, Diehm, Kamradt, Bryce Dodge, fourth, 4:12.85; and 4x100 – Mason Brinkman, Jordan Ortega, Trenton Vollink, Bradley Zamudio, fifth, :50.30.
In the JV division, Tyson Tessum won the 100 meter dash (:13.50), while Ortega was fourth (:14.10), Brinkman was fifth (:14.28) and Landon Elwood was sixth (:14.44). Place finishers in the shot put were Jacob Cates, third (:35'1.5"); Ethan Baker, fourth (32'2"); and Shane Kosters, seventh (26'3").
The Hawk JV sprint medley relay team of Elwood, Ortega, Vollink and Alan Abonce placed second (1:53.01).
