Boys are sixth at golf sectional, WEC tourney and dual competition

Sixth place was the landing spot for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn at the Class 1A boys' golf sectional meet, the War Eagle Conference tournament and in the conference dual meet standings.

The Hawks recorded a 382 team score to finish sixth at the sectional meet on May 14 at Sanborn Golf and Country Club.

Harris-Lake Park and West Bend-Mallard move on to the district meet by finishing first and second with team scores of 315 and 365. George-Little Rock came in third at 372, followed by Trinity Christian 378 and South O'Brien 381, with Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire finishing seventh at 383.

Samuel Heyn finished 10th overall with an 18-hole total of 90 (45-45). Other individual results were Ben Haack 94 (45-49), 15th; Wyatt Borden 95 (48-47), 16th; Nick Bronstad 103 (55-48), 34th; Lucas Kroese 107 (53-54), 36th; and Keith DeBoer 108 (53-55), 37th.

"It was unfortunate to end the season the way we did. The kids worked hard today, but we put ourselves in too much trouble," said Hawk coach Mark Japenga. "Seniors Ben Haack and Samuel Heyn did a nice job for us this year and they will be missed. We look forward to next year and getting better throughout the season."

Lucas Gunderson and Jaxson Heikens, of H-LP, led the field with rounds of 76 and 77, respectively.

• War Eagle Conference tourney

At the conference tourney on May 10 at Sioux Center, H-M-S finished No. 6 among the 11 teams with a team score of 380.

Harris-Lake Park won the title with a final score of 330, two strokes ahead of Unity Christian at 332. Remsen St. Mary's was third at 351, followed by Gehlen Catholic 363 and Akron-Westfield 368. After the Hawks came MMCRU 392, South O'Brien 398, Trinity Christian 401, Hinton 408 and West Sioux 426.

Individually, Haack shot an 18-hole total of 86 (44-42), good for ninth overall.

Also competing were Heyn 92 (39-53), 21st; Borden 100 (47-53), 36th; Bronstad 102 (49-53), 42nd; DeBoer 112 (56-56), 55th; and Kroese 127 (60-67), 63rd.

Heikens and Gunderson were the leading individuals with scores of 73 and 75.

• Top Westerners for dual win

H-M-S and Akron-Westfield matched scorecards for the first nine holes of the conference tourney to determine the winner of their dual meet. The Hawks claimed the victory by a single stroke (179-180).

Heyn topped the leader board with his 39 and Haack was fourth with a 44. Other scores were Borden 47, Bronstad 49, DeBoer 56 and Kroese 60.

The Westerners' Raiden Ericson and Landon Vossberg both shot 44 to finish second and third among the medalists.

The win gave H-M-S a final dual record of 4-6, putting them in a sixth-place tie with MMCRU.
