• Arrested on drug charges

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reported that Matthew Laue, 49, and Erin McMahon, 46, both of Austin, Minn., were arrested during a traffic stop at the intersection of Highway 18 and M27.

After Laue was stopped for a traffic violation, an investigation discovered that both subjects were allegedly in possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. They were transported to the Clay County jail where they were held to appear before the magistrate.

Charges filed against Laue and McMahon were Possession of a Controlled Substance 2nd Offense-Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

• Hits road sign, ends up in ditch

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that Caleb James Farrell, 19, of Primghar, was traveling eastbound on B40 on May 14 at 6:44 p.m. That road is closed for construction. Farrell fell asleep or blacked out then swerved to miss the “Road Closed” sign, hitting the sign with the right front of his vehicle and ending up in a field.

Farrell complained of pain/injury, but was not transported. Damage to the 1992 Ford F250 was listed at $800; damage to the sign owned by O’Brien County totaled $1,000; and damage to corn owned by Jon Van Beek, of Primghar, was listed at $75.

Farrell was cited for Failure to Obey Traffic Control Device.

• Runs into back of vehicle

Vehicles driven by Jonathon Joel Garrett, 32, of Spirit Lake, and Diane April Dicalogero, 55, of Hartley, were traveling east on Highway 18/320th Street on May 15 at 7:30 a.m. According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, Garrett was reaching for a water bottle and did not see the Dicalogero vehicle making a left turn. His 2013 Ford F150 ran into the back of Dicalogero’s 2003 GMC Yukon.

Both were reported to complain of pain or injury, but were not transported. Damage to the Garrett vehicle was listed at $20,000 while damage to the Dicalogero vehicle was estimated at $7,000. Garrett was cited for Failure to Maintain Control.

• Semi hits van

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office investigated an accident that occurred on B40/390th Street on May 19 at 11:22 a.m.

The report stated that a 2019 Mack tractor/semi-trailer driven by Craig Steven Torngren, 57, of Sioux City, attempted to make a left turn onto B40 as a 2019 Mercedes-Benz van, driven by Karen Marie Cero, 57, of Sioux Falls, S.D., was westbound. Torngren did not see the Cero vehicle which was in a blind spot behind a side mirror. The semi pulled out and struck the side of the van.

No injuries were reported. Damage estimates were $1,000 for the semi and $4,500 for the van. Torngren was cited for Failure to Yield to Vehicle on Right.
