Benefit to aid woman with inoperable brain tumor
Local residents are banding together to help a Sutherland woman who's been blindsided by illness.
Rhiannon Berger-Amos was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor this spring. She's waged a war in the months since, enduring several rounds of radiation and chemotherapy. A benefit is slated in her honor this Saturday, Aug. 21, in Sutherland and Hartley that features a motorcycle ride, supper, horse carriage rides and a silent auction.
"Rhiannon was a great asset to our drive-in and we felt we needed to do what we could to help her thru this," said Tammy Ginger, one of the event's organizers. "She is a fighter."
Berger-Amos' problems started in April while working at D-Lux Drive Inn in Hartley. Ginger said her friend started having trouble at work, so she took her to the hospital.
What followed was a bevy of tests that eventually unveiled her illness. Berger-Amos was initially prescribed seizure medication and put in speech and physical therapy, which eventually gave way to more treatments. She was subjected to radiation five days a week for six weeks and prescribed three different chemo medications for a year.
According to a May 20 post on Berger-Amos' Facebook page, the goal is to shrink her tumor and make it less aggressive. She wrapped up radiation treatment in July and was able to ring the bell in celebration.
Saturday's cycle/car run fundraiser starts at 11 a.m. at Sweeney's in Sutherland and ends at the Hartley American Legion. All proceeds benefit Berger-Amos. An ad on Page 4 provides more details.
