Funeral services for Glenn L. Bechler were held Friday, Aug. 13, 2021, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer, with Father Tim Hogan officiating.
Casket bearers were Sally Cole, Michael Gerdes, Jannette Windisch, Brenda Peterson, Roxanne Gross, Tim Struve, Steve Struve, Dennis Struve, Tammy Heflin, Kevin Bechler, Joe Bechler, Christopher Abel, Corley Abel and Megan Martin. Interment was at North Lawn Memorial Park in Spencer, with military services conducted by the American Legion and the VFW of Spencer. Warner Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.
Glenn LeRoy Bechler, the son of Roy and Sabrie (Wilcox) Bechler, was born Jan. 15, 1920, in Rockford, N.D. Glenn’s family moved to Iowa when he was 6 and his childhood years were spent around Sac City where he received his education, graduating from Sac City High School in 1939.
On Sept. 8, 1942, Glenn married Wanita O’Tool in Pomeroy. Following their marriage they lived north of Sac City, where Glenn and Wanita farmed. In 1945, he entered the military and served with the U.S. Army Air Force from October 1945 until his agriculture discharge in March of 1946.
In 1958, they moved to Royal where he worked as a farmhand for Kathryn and Warren Bauman and Alice and Larry LeClair. Later, Wanita and Glenn worked as church custodians. He later worked as a custodian at Clay Central Community School for 16 years until his retirement. He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church until its closure. Glenn was currently a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer.
Glenn passed away at Longhouse Residence in Spencer, on Monday, Aug. 9, 2021, at the age of 101. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Sabrie; wife, Wanita, in 2002; one sister in infancy, Ruth Bechler; three brothers: Merle, Harold and Robert Bechler; and a son-in-law, James Weishaar.
Left to cherish his memory are four daughters: Linda (Gary) Gerdes, of Weatherford, Texas; Patricia Weishaar, of Spencer; Pamela (Carl) Struve, of Rolfe; and Mary (Clark) Abel, of Greenville; one son, Gary (Lea) Bechler, of Spencer; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; four great-great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
