• Incident in Hartley leads to arrest
Felony and misdemeanor charges were filed following an incident that occurred on Aug. 22 in Hartley.
According to the report, the Hartley Police Department responded to a call involving a fight at a Hartley residence. Colton Lee Spence Vreeman, 25, of Sanborn, allegedly was intimidating another person with a handgun, firing a shot from the gun and possessing the firearm while reportedly being intoxicated.
Vreeman was in possession of the gun when it discharged as he ran down the stairs at the residence. A bullet hole was discovered in a wall near the bottom of the staircase.
The investigation led to Vreeman being arrested and charged with Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon, a class D felony; Reckless Use of a Firearm Causing Property Damage, an aggravated misdemeanor; and Possession or Carrying of Dangerous Weapons While Intoxicated, a serious misdemeanor.
Vreeman was taken to the O’Brien County jail. Court records state that his preliminary hearing in O’Brien County Magistrate Court is scheduled for Sept. 13.
• Charged with felony child endangerment
An incident that occurred in Hartley has resulted in charges being filed against the father of a child on Aug. 23.
Court documents state that Jesse Ray Bernier, 32, of Hartley, was charged with Child Endangerment with Bodily Injury, a class D felony. Bernier was reported to have had discipline problems with his son when he allegedly picked up the boy by the hood of his sweatshirt, lifting him off the floor. According to authorities, the boy suffered ligature marks and abrasions on his neck and red marks from ear-to-ear.
Bernier was arrested and taken to the O’Brien County jail. The child was removed from the home.
• Collision at intersection
Two vehicles collided at an intersection on Aug. 18 at 1:20 p.m.
The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that Alejandro Bonilla, 31, of Sheldon, stopped at a stop sign on 300th Street and upon entering the intersection, failed to yield to a vehicle driven by Jerry Lynn Smit, 53, of George, which was southbound on Nest Avenue. The two vehicles collided in the intersection.
Neither driver was injured. Damage estimates were $2,710 to the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Bonilla and $5,710 to the 2015 Honda CRV driven by Smit. Bonilla was cited for Failure to Yield from Stop Sign.
• Pickup strikes cattle on roadway
Cattle on the roadway contributed to an accident that occurred on Aug. 18 at 10:32 p.m.
According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, Levi Verdoorn, 23, of Archer, was southbound on Oriole Avenue when his Ford F350 struck an undetermined number of cattle standing on the traveled portion of the roadway. A cow and a calf, owned by Dan and Lorna Wilson, of Paullina, and valued at $1,600, were killed. They had gotten out from a location on 450th Street and traveled approximately three-quarters of a mile to the scene of the accident.
Verdoorn was not injured. Damage to his pickup was estimated at $15,000.
• Injured in rollover accident
A Primghar man was injured in a rollover accident that occurred on Aug. 24 at 6:15 p.m.
The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that Jeffrey James Hattermann, 67, was eastbound in the 5600 mile of 390th Street when he had a medical issue that caused him to lose consciousness. His 1996 Ford Ranger left the roadway and entered the south ditch. The pickup struck a “no passing zone” sign and a utility pole, causing it to roll onto the driver’s side before coming to rest.
Hattermann was transported by Primghar Ambulance to MercyOne Hospital for treatment of minor/non-incapacitating injuries. Damage estimates included $1,500 for the Ranger, $100 for the sign pole owned by O’Brien County Secondary Roads and $1,200 for the utility pole owned by North West REC, of Orange City.
