H-M-S senior Aiden Jensen competes in the boys' varsity race at the Sibley-Ocheyedan Invitational.
After a 12-day layoff from competition, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's cross country runners improved their times during the Sibley-Ocheyedan Invitational on Sept. 7.
Nearly all of the Hawks clocked faster times than they did in the opener at Cherokee, with some runners improving their performance by as much as two minutes.
The competition at S-O also increased, both in quality and in quantity. There were approximately 100 runners in both varsity races, several of whom are rated among the best in the state. Three girls' teams and an equal number of boys' squads are also rated among the leaders in Iowa.
Leading the H-M-S varsity girls was Madison Otto, who placed 27th. Kamryn Ebel came in 53rd, Juliana Pasillas was 83rd, Gracie Knobloch was 86th and Ashleigh Vermeer finished 88th.
Bryce Dodge and George Vargas were the best boys' finishers for H-M-S, running 32nd and 34th, respectively. Aiden Bush came in 78th, Blaine Finster was 85th and Aiden Jensen finished 89th.
Boys' JV finishers were Ryan Grotluschen, 31st; Damian Dodge, 38th; and Gavin Faulkner, 48th.
The varsity boys finished 12th among the 17 teams while H-M-S was 10th among the girls' teams.
H-M-S will compete at the Sioux Central Invitational on Sept. 16 and host its own meet on Sept. 20 at Sanborn Golf and Country Club.
