Early leads can't derail Unity Christian

H-M-S is swept by War Eagle leaders

Getting an early jump on Unity Christian in two sets gave Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn reason to get excited, but that momentum proved to be short-lived. The Knights (3A No. 10) quickly rebounded to earn convincing 25-10, 25-10, 25-12 wins to complete the War Eagle Conference sweep.

The Hawks led 4-1 in the first set and 3-1 in the third, but could not sustain either advantage. Unity Christian pulled away in both sets as H-M-S could not string points together. The Knights, who finished the match with 31 kills, dominated the middle set from the start.

H-M-S and Unity Christian served at the same efficiency (87 percent), but the winners had a big advantage in serve attempts (74-33) and aces (16-3).

Elise Haack was 8-of-8 in serving, Kaley Pearson was 9-of-10 with two aces, Abby Otto was 4-of-4 with an ace, Frankie Mohni was 4-of-5 and Abby Kunzman was successful on all three of her attempts.

At the net, Jasmine Lux, Haack and Pearson all had two kills. Emily Otto and Haack each recorded a block assist.

On defense, Haack and Pearson each had five digs, Mohni had three, and Emily Mutombo and Abby Otto each had two. Mohni also contributed three set assists while Pearson had two.

H-M-S (0-13, 0-6) travels to South O'Brien on Oct. 7 and finishes the regular season with home matches against MMCRU on Oct. 12 and Akron-Westfield on Oct. 14.
