Regular season ends with loss to Akron-Westfield

The 2021 regular season ended just as it started for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn volleyball team. The Hawks lost to Akron-Westfield in the opening match of the West Lyon tournament back in late August and they were swept by the same team (25-11, 25-11, 25-8) to close out the regular season on Oct. 14 in Hartley.

The Hawks steadily lost ground in each set as they were unable to generate enough points on offense or counteract the net strength of the Westerners, who recorded 34 kills.

H-M-S had a perfect night at the serving line in a limited number of attempts. Kaley Pearson was 8-of-8, Abby Kunzman and Abby Otto were 5-of-5, Elise Haack and Emily Mutombo were 4-of-4 and Frankie Mohni was 3-of-3.

Jasmine Lux recorded six of the Hawks' 11 kills and Pearson had three. Emily Otto finished with two block assists and Pearson had five set assists.

Haack came up with 10 digs, Pearson had six and Kunzman, Mutombo and Abby Otto each had four.

H-M-S ended War Eagle Conference play with one win in 10 matches, and had an overall record of 1-16.

• vs. MMCRU

The finish was much better than the start for H-M-S, but the end result was a 3-0 loss (4-25, 16-25, 23-25) in its Oct. 12 volleyball match with MMCRU in Hartley.

The Hawks scored the first two points of the opening set but then went through two scoring droughts that sealed their fate. H-M-S took the early lead in the second set, fell behind and then went ahead 9-7. Another offensive lapse by H-M-S allowed the Royals to pull away for the win.

The third set started with the Hawks trailing early before rallying to take a 9-8 lead. MMCRU broke a 12-12 tie and extended their advantage to six. They were leading 22-18 when H-M-S answered with five straight points to go ahead by one. MMCRU then scored the final three points to seal the victory.

As has been the case much of this season, the Hawks were at a disadvantage in attacks and serve attempts against MMCRU.

Abby Douma put down five kills and Jasmine Lux and Emily Otto each had four. Otto also had two block assists. Leaders in set assists were Abby Kunzman and Frankie Mohni with four each and Kaley Pearson with three.

In serving, Emily Mutombo and Pearson were 9-of-9 with an ace, Mohni was 7-of-8, Elise Haack was 5-of-6, Kunzman was 4-of-6 and Lux was 3-of-3.

On defense, Haack had 11 digs, Mutombo had six, Pearson had four and Kunzman added three.
