Consistent scoring leads to third-place finish

11 Okoboji/HMS wrestlers place at Emmetsburg tourney

Okoboji/HMS had only one individual champion at the Bob Roethler Invitational, but a pair of runner-up finishers and two wrestlers who finished third helped lift the Pioneers to third place as a team Saturday at Emmetsburg.

Nick Bronstad placed first at 285 pounds, pinning his first three opponents before winning a major decision in the title match. The senior won by fall against Brodie Lawson of Lake Mills (1:22), Caleb Cooper of Forest City (1:03) and Joseph Sanders of Pocahontas Area (3:34). In the finals, Bronstad defeated Gage Jorgenson, of Emmetsburg, 10-1.

A pair of wrestlers from H-M-S each placed fourth. Bryce Dodge won his 170-pound quarterfinal match by fall over Dwaune Dykes of Storm Lake (4:20), lost in the semifinals to Cade Crees of Estherville-Lincoln Central (12-7), pinned Jacob Money of Spirit Lake Park (0:44) and lost in the third-place match by major decision to Ben Massner of West Bend-Mallard (20-9).

James Gellerman was pinned in the quarterfinal round at 182 pounds by Gabe Poolman of Spirit Lake Park (1:37), then pinned Lewis Vulk of Spencer (2:12) and Trenton Sorensen of Eagle Grove (4:21). He lost again to Poolman in the third-place match (2:42).

Another H-M-S wrestler to compete was Ethan Wiersma. He was pinned in the 195-pound quarterfinals by Wyatt Hanna of Lake Mills (3:51), pinned Caden Brosam of Spencer (1:31) and lost by fall to Tyler Jurva of Spirit Lake Park (0:15). In the fifth place match, Wiersma lost by fall to Ethan Zaugg of West Bend-Mallard (2:29).

Runner-up finishers for Okoboji/HMS were Noah Strantz at 152 pounds and Sam Pas at 220. Tyce Hanson placed third at 113 pounds as did Dylan Jones at 120. Nathaniel Franklyn placed fourth at 160, Brennan Baschke finished sixth at 126 and Alex Rouse was eighth at 132.

Emmetsburg won the team title with 234 points and Spencer was second at 217. Okoboji/HMS finished third with 188.5 points followed by Lake Mills 167, Pocahontas Area 146, Eagle Grove 144.5, Estherville-Lincoln Central 122, Spirit Lake Park 116, Forest City 96.5, West Bend-Mallard 93 and Storm Lake 91.

Okoboji/HMS closes out the pre-holiday schedule with a Siouxland Conference double dual at Central Lyon/G-LR on Dec. 16 and at the Spencer tournament on Dec. 18.
