Blood drive is Dec. 29 in Hartley

The next Hartley community blood drive is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 29, from 12:30-5:30 p.m. at the Hartley Community Center. New donors are especially needed.

Sentinel-News closed

The Sentinel-News will be closed on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24 and New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31. The adverstising deadline for the Northwest Iowa Peach is Thursday at 5 p.m., for the next two weeks.

Celebrate Christmas in Melvin

The First Reformed Church in Melvin will be having an area-wide Christmas Day service on Saturday, Dec. 25 at 10 a.m. Everyone is welcome to come and celebrate the birth of our Savior.

In addition to singing a number of favorite Christmas carols and hearing the Christmas story, the pastor will share a brief message entitled “Let’s Keep Christmas in Our Hearts All Through the New Year.”

Enjoy PHC activities this winter

The Prairie Heritage Center is bustling with fun activities that are delightful so make sure a trip to the center is on your calendar this winter.

In December you will find many winter and holiday themed crafts that are set out for people of all ages to enjoy. Create ornaments for your tree, design a pair of binoculars to spot Santa and birds with, and create fun reindeer. You will also find other fun activities like an indoor storybook trail, investigating different fossils and exploring space.

January will boast a new set of activities that will focus around birds, snowflakes and even fun things to do outside (if you want to brave the cold).

The Prairie Heritage Center is open Tuesday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and on Saturday from 1-4 p.m. It also will be open later on the second Wednesday of the month from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. The center will be closed for the holidays on Dec. 24, Dec. 25, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

Blood drives to be held at Spencer

LifeServe Blood Center is conducting a drive at Southpark Mall, 901 11th Street SW in Spencer, on Tuesday, Dec. 28, from 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Another drive will be held at the same location on Monday, Jan. 3, from 1-5 p.m.

Christmas dinner at Sacred Heart Catholic Church

Sacred Heart Parish will be providing a Christmas dinner on Saturday, Dec. 25, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

The dinner is for anyone who may be alone or in need of a meal on Christmas Day. The menu will include baked ham, cheesy potatoes, green bean casserole, strawberry fluff, rolls and delicious sugar cookies.

Sacred Heart Parish Hall is located at 1111 4th Avenue West, just south of the Clay County Fairgrounds, and has plenty of accessible parking in the back lot located directly behind the church. Please listen to KICD for any weather cancellations.

HLC food pantry

Current hours for the food pantry at Hope Lutheran Church in Everly are Wednesdays, 1-5 p.m. Everyone is allowed to come in and pick out their food, but masks are required.

Regular hours at Royal library

Hours at the Royal Public Library are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 3-5 p.m .; and Tuesday and Saturday, 9:30-11:30 a.m.

Program for women who manage land Jan. 27 at Milford

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will host “Women Managing Farmland” on Thursday, Jan. 27 from 5-8 p.m. at the Milford Community Center. The center is located at 806 N Avenue in Milford.

The program is designed to better serve and meet the needs of women farmland owners and managers.

“Women own nearly half the farmland in Iowa,” said Gary Wright, an Extension farm management specialist. “Their decisions play a vital role in Iowa agriculture, and this program aims to provide an opportunity for education and networking.”

According to Wright, the program will cover land leasing and value, federal farm programs, succession planning and the Beginning Farmer Center. Presenters represent the USDA Farm Service Agency, ISU Extension and Outreach and the Iowa State Center for Ag Law and Taxation. There will also be time for questions and networking.

This program is completely free to attend, but preregistration is requested by Jan. 25 to ensure proper space, materials and a light supper. Preregister to ISU Extension and Outreach Dickinson County at (712) 336-3488 or ISU Extension and Outreach Clay County at (712) 262-2264.
