Applicants sought for healthcare scholarship, loan program

Applications are now being accepted for the Bennie B. and Ernestine F. Shine Scholarship, the Adam J. Anderson Scholarship and the Cornwall Loan Program. All programs are designed to help area students pursue healthcare careers.

The Shine Scholarship fund, administered by Spencer Hospital, annually awards funds to persons who have completed at least one semester of a nursing or allied health program, such as radiology, therapy programs (respiratory care, speech, physical or occupational), medical technology, laboratory tech, paramedic training or pharmacy. These programs are not intended to fund individuals pursuing a degree in medicine, dentistry, physician assistant or veterinary science. The Cornwall Loan Program is similarly designed to help local students in a healthcare field by providing low-interest loans.

The Adam J. Anderson scholarship program annually awards funds to persons pursuing education and training to become a certified EMS provider (EMT through Paramedic).

The application deadline for the Shine Scholarship, the Adam J. Anderson Scholarship and the Cornwall Loan is March 31. Recipients will be notified of their award in May. Nelson Findling receives ISU degree

More than 1,800 graduates received degrees from Iowa State University during graduate and undergraduate commencement ceremonies held Dec. 17-18 at Hilton Coliseum in Ames.

Nelson Findling, of Royal, was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural and Life Sciences Education.

Scholarships awarded to area NCC students

Area students at Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon have been awarded scholarships of varying amounts.

Obaga James, of Hartley, and Innocent Ongaga, of Sanborn, were awarded the Community Memorial Health Center scholarship. Both are Nursing students at NCC. CMHC in Hartley awards $1,000 scholarships annually to deserving students based on their academic achievement and potential for success in a health-related field.

James was also awarded a Multi-Cultural Scholarship by the NCC Foundation. Eligible recipients must have a high school grade point average of 2.0 and be a member of a recognized race/ethnic minority.

Caleb Smith, of Hartley, is the recipient of the Mel Marcotte Memorial Powerline Scholarship. The $500 award is named for Marcotte, who was instrumental in creating the Powerline program at NCC.

Nathan Serr, of Sanborn, is a recipient of the Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship. He is a student in the Associate of Arts program. The $500 scholarship was established to honor academic achievements and leadership demonstrated by members of the Phi Theta Kappa chapter at NCC.

Todd Klein, of Sanborn, a student in NCC’s Heavy Equipment program, was awarded a Valley Puller Scholarship. The $1,000 scholarships help students in technical fields that are commonly utilized in the Rock Valley area, mainly in automotive, manufacturing and heavy equipment.

Lucas DeGroot, of Sanborn, was awarded the Interstates Companies Scholarship, which recognizes second-year students who hold a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0. An essay was also a deciding factor in awarding the $1,000 scholarship. DeGroot is a student in the Industrial & Commercial Wiring program.

Apply now for Blue Scholarship

Applications are now being accepted for the 2022 Robert D. Blue Scholarship. Applicants must be a current senior or former graduate of any Iowa high school who plans to attend a college or university within the state.

According to State Treasurer Michael L. Fitzgerald, awards are based on financial need, an original essay, academic achievement and recommendations.

Since established in 1949 by Governor Robert D. Blue, the scholarship has helped hundreds of Iowa students fulfill their higher education dreams at one of Iowa’s 65 colleges and universities.
