Jill Kathleen Foss, of Everly, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2022, at the Spencer Hospital. She had recently undergone surgery for a fractured hip. There will be a private burial at Lone Tree Cemetery in Everly, with a memorial service at 10 a.m. on May 28 at Warner Funeral Home in Everly.
Jill was born in Muscatine to Bob and Millie (Struve) Scharnberg on Oct. 7, 1946. Her family moved to the Scharnberg family farm near Everly and Jill lived most of her life within a few miles of there. She attended country school and Everly schools, graduating in 1965. Jill attended State College of Iowa (now UNI) and the University of South Dakota. In high school, Jill was an outstanding basketball player. The Cattlefeeders participated in the state basketball tournament all four years she played. She was a guard her freshman year and an exceptional post forward her last three years playing 6-girl basketball.
Jill married Doug Foss at Hope Lutheran Church on Feb. 18, 1968. In 1980 they became the parents of a son, Mark Douglas Foss. Jill was a wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, granddaughter, homemaker, Hawkeye fan, animal lover and avid devotee of the soap opera “Days of Our Lives.”
Doug passed away in 2004. With the help of many loyal friends, family and neighbors she was able to stay in her beloved home despite diminishing health.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her father, Bob Scharnberg; an infant brother, Jack; her sisters-in-law, Sheila and Denise Scharnberg; nephew, Ben Scharnberg; and many beloved pets.
Jill is survived by her son, Mark (Tess Jackson); her granddaughters: Addison, Nora and Maggie Foss, of Milford; her mother, Millie Scharnberg, of Spencer; her brothers: Gary, of Everly; Steve (Suzy), of West Des Moines; and Chuck, of Vail, Ariz.; her sister, Jan (Joel) Carl, of Mount Vernon; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
