• Train car strikes grain trailer
An accident involving a tractor/semi-trailer and a Canadian Pacific locomotive pulling several railcars occurred at 1:35 p.m. Jan. 6, at a railroad crossing on Van Buren Avenue, near Hartley.
The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that a 2014 Mack 600 tractor/semi-trailer operated by Ronald Edward Kettner, 60, of Springfield, Minn., had turned south onto Van Buren Avenue as the train began to back east into the crossing. The train conductor saw that the tractor/semi-trailer was not stopping and signaled the engineer to stop the train. Kettner did not yield and the train could not stop in time to avoid hitting the right rear corner of the semi-trailer. According to the report, Kettner admitted he should have yielded to the train in the crossing and was at fault.
No injuries were reported. Estimated damage to the semi-trailer was $2,500. There was no apparent damage to the locking mechanism on the rear railcar. Kettner was cited for CMV-Fail to Stop for Railroad Crossing Not Clear.
