H-M-S musicians heat things up at late winter concert

Last week's ice and cold temperatures made it a good time for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn band and choir's late winter concert on Feb. 21.

The jazz band opened the program with "One O'clock Jump, "Georgia on My Mind" and "Dance Big'un, Dance." Featured performers were Ryan Borden and Owen Haspels, alto sax; Abby Kunzman, trombone; Annika Overmire, trumpet; and Kaley Pearson, piano.

The jazz band recently competed at the state contest and received a II rating, and finished ninth out of 13 ensembles during the district contest at LeMars.

Selections performed by the jazz choir were "Summertime," "When I Fall in Love" and "Feelin' Good." Soloists included Jaela Anliker, Jamie Diaz, Marie Hicks, Jasmine Lux and Natalie McDaniel.

The jazz choir competed at the state contest and received a II rating and placed seventh among 2A schools at the Shake the Lakes contest at Spirit Lake.

The concert band's repertoire included "Rhythmicity," Selections from "Sound of Music" and Highlights from "Oz the Great and Powerful." Closing out the evening was the concert choir singing "Defying Gravity" (from "Wicked"), "Found/Tonight" and "Forever Country."

High school instrumental and vocal music students, and directors Corgan Petersen and Kristi Wingert, are looking forward to the music trip to Nashville, Tenn., March 24-28.
