81 points gives H-M-S girls fourth place at Hawk Relays
Individuals and relay teams from Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn placed in the Top 3 in nine events at the Hawk Relays on April 22. Those results combined to give the Hawk girls 81 points and a fourth-place finish among the eight teams.
Emily Mutombo started things for H-M-S with a winning effort in the long jump. Her best attempt measured 15'3".
Mutombo then joined Abby Otto, Lydia Harders and Jasmine Lux in a winning effort in the distance medley relay. The quartet ran the 1600-meter race in a time of 4:33.22.
Individuals adding runner-up finishes were Mutombo in the 100-meter dash (:13.90) and Lux in the 200 (:28.05).
The Hawks finished second in the final two relays of the meet. The runners in the distance medley also ran the 4x100 (:52.68), while the 4x400 team was comprised of Otto, Harders, Kylee Schiphoff and Lux (4:32.59).
Third-place finishers were Harders in the 200-meter dash (:28.09) and Anna Vander Veen in the 400-meter hurdles (1:20.20).
Other individual results in the running events included a fourth-place finish by Madison Otto in the 3000-meter run (12:54.0); a fifth-place effort by Kamryn Ebel in the 800-meter run (2:58.95); and sixth place by Otto in the 1500-meter run (6:06.27).
Two H-M-S relay teams finished fifth. Vander Veen, Schiphoff, Frankie Mohni and Emily Otto ran the 4x200 (2:05.89); and Mohni, Otto, Schiphoff and Vander Veen ran the sprint medley (2:07.39).
H-M-S had four other place-finishers in the field events. Placing fifth were Eliza Tewes in the discus throw (68'11") and Schiphoff in the high jump (4'2"). Coming in sixth were Alexis Grover in the shot put (23'7-1/2") and Lainie Raveling in the discus (68'6").
Several Hawks competed in JV events. Megan Otto won the 100-meter dash (:16.08) and Luna Buchler Alonso finished third (:17.92). Running the JV 200-meter dash were Madyson Torres, fourth (:32.63) and Kelly Buhrmann, ninth (:37.66).
The JV 4x100 relay team of Torres, Buhrmann, Alonso and Otto placed third (1:04.02), as did the 4x200 squad of Torres, Buhrmann, Jamie Diaz and Otto (2:21.20).
Raveling placed fourth in the JV shot put (19'5") and Natalie McDaniels was sixth (16'2"). Grover was third in the JV discus (65'8") and McDaniels was fifth (43'4").
The battle for the girls' team title at the Hawk Relays was close, with Okoboji winning the meet with 147 points and Cherokee finishing second with 141. Sibley-Ocheyedan finished third with 84 points and H-M-S was right behind in fourth with 81. Other team scores were Akron-Westfield 51, Remsen St. Mary's 33, George-Little Rock 27 and Trinity Christian 13.
H-M-S will travel to North Union (Armstrong) for a meet on April 28 and to Hinton on May 2 for the War Eagle Conference meet.
