Daycare fundraising event planned

The Hartley Community Daycare Center has announced its 3rd Annual Love for the Daycare Fundraiser. The event will be held on Saturday, June 18 at the Hartley Community Center.

Food distribution May 18 at Trinity UCC

The Food Bank of Iowa’s mobile pantry program will be conducted on Wednesday, May 18, from 4-6 p.m. at Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley. The program is available free of charge and geared toward individuals in need of food assistance.

Participants are asked to stay in their vehicles and line up on the east side of the parking lot. The food will be brought to you as you drive under the canopy.

Maytag Month at Burley’s Appliance

Burley’s Appliance in Hartley is once again holding specials throughout the month of May in honor of Maytag Month.

Summer sports seasons coming down the pike

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s baseball and softball teams will get an early start to their 2022 seasons.

The Hawks open the baseball season Wednesday, May 18, when they host Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire. Softball gets underway, also against GT/RA, on Monday, May 23, at Ruthven. Both are scheduled as JV/varsity games that start at 5:30 p.m.

Upcoming events at Hartley Public Library

Craft Night for adults will be held at the library on Monday, May 16, at 6:30 p.m. Participants will be making flower seed paper, which is a wonderful way to recycle paper into something beautiful.

The Hartley Public Library will host Bingo at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 17. Stop in for a friendly game with tasty prizes.

Commencement exercises May 13 at NCC

Commencement exercises at Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon will be held on Friday, May 13. There are 218 graduates in the spring 2022 class.

The Nursing Pinning and Commencement Ceremony will be held in the Northwest Iowa Lifelong Learning and Recreation Center at 9:30 a.m.

The afternoon spring commencement ceremony (all programs except Nursing) will also be held in the Northwest Iowa Lifelong Learning and Recreation Center at 1:30 p.m. The commencement address will be given by Sara Vaske, of LeMars, a Design Technology graduate. The Alumnus of the Year Award will also be presented.

Emerald ash borer meeting May 18 at Cherokee

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will host an informational meeting concerning emerald ash borer on Wednesday, May 18 from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Cherokee County Extension office located at 209 Centennial Drive in Cherokee.

Emerald ash borer is a small beetle that kills all species of ash trees. The pest’s presence is confirmed in Clay and O’Brien counties, as well as in Buena Vista, Cherokee, Ida, Sac and Sioux counties.

The meeting will address homeowners’ questions and help guide them in deciding their next steps. Attendees can expect to learn: How to identify emerald ash borer and signs of infestation in trees; emerald ash borer treatment options and how to know if a tree is a candidate for treatment; and ash tree identification and replacement options.

The meeting will feature Dr. Donald Lewis, ISU Professor and Extension Entomologist; Mike Kintner, Emerald Ash Borer Coordinator with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship; and Amber Thompson, Forestry Specialist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

This public meeting is free to attend but preregistration is requested as seating is limited. For more information and/or to preregister, call the Cherokee County Extension office at (712) 225-6196.

Hours at the Royal Public Library are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 3-5 p.m.; and Tuesday and Saturday, 9:30-11:30 a.m.

HLC food pantry

Current hours for the food pantry at Hope Lutheran Church in Everly are Wednesdays, 1-5 p.m. Everyone is allowed to come in and pick out their food, but masks are required.

Al Anon meetings

Al Anon meetings are held at the following locations each week:

Wednesday, 8 p.m., 511 Southmoor, Spencer; Thursday, 8 p.m., Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Royal; Sunday, 7 p.m., Sanford Medical Center, 118 N 7th Ave., Sheldon.
