1997: Utility specs OK’d for Morningside Addition
• May 15, 1947
The membership of the Hartley Chamber of Commerce voted to incorporate the local organization and adopt a set of bylaws. A committee comprised of Lyle Shinkle, Ed Popp and Henry Wieditz was appointed to revise the bylaws proposed by the United States Chamber of Commerce.
The Hartley High School brass sextet placed second at the National Music Contest at St. Joseph, Mo. The group was comprised of Nathalie Morris, French horn; Henry Wieditz, Jr., trombone; Tom Adolph, tuba; Richard Albrecht, baritone horn; and Donald Steinbeck and Wayne Muhs, trumpets.
The Moneta High School junior-senior banquet under the sponsorship of Mrs. Josie Jacobs was held in the private dining room of the Tangney Hotel at Spencer. “Bon Voyage” (a good voyage) was the banquet theme which was carried out in the decorations and after-dinner speeches.
• May 11, 1972
A new plaque was to be placed in the Hartley High School on which the names of the math-science award winners were to be engraved. The plaque was to be inscribed in memory of Oliver Abbott, a longtime teacher at the school.
The Athena Club, of Hartley, gave a memorial of a Gaymar Temp Pump to the Community Memorial Hospital. The device would be used in the physical therapy department and was given in memory of Mrs. Ruby Boles, who was president of the club at the time of her death.
Tammy Veldboom placed first in the Poppy Poster Contest sponsored by the Hartley American Legion Auxiliary. Randy Baysinger placed second and Sue Scott, Richard Eilers, Mike Kraft and Douglas Nagel tied for third. Participants were the fourth grade social studies class.

One hundred dollars in proceeds from the H-M-S Mayors’ Prayer Breakfast were distributed to each recreation program in Hartley, Melvin, Sanborn and May City. Students Michele Dummett, Jeremy Hilbert, Brandon Rusche and Angela Dather helped make the presentations.
Plans and specifications for sewer and water utilities and the street paving in Morningside Estates First Addition in east Hartley were approved. The plans called for 10-inch and eight-inch clay sewer mains, six-inch plastic water mains and options for either concrete or asphalt paving. An option was also included for curb and gutter on a portion of North 8th Avenue East.
The I.E.F. Club, of Hartley, sponsored the annual fingerprinting of H-M-S second grade students as part of the McGruff Program. Chief Doug Reese and Officer Brian Denny, of the Hartley Police Department, fingerprinted the students.
