1947: Special committee declares war on flies

• May 22, 1947

A statewide move to stamp out the menace of flies in Iowa was being translated into action in Hartley. The local fly control committee established the goal of making the community and outlying farms fly-free during the summer.

A large delegation from Hartley was among the throng that jammed Spencer for the 9th District Legion and Auxiliary Convention. Hartley was represented in the colorful parade by a marching group of Legionnaires and the Hartley school band.

Behind the two-hit pitching of Tom Adolph and fine play by the rest of the team, Hartley was able to win the final game of the Sioux Valley Conference baseball tournament, 4-3, over Paullina. It was the first title in baseball that Hartley had won in many years.

• May 18, 1972

Sixty-two seniors received diplomas at graduation exercises held at Hartley High School. Rev. Oddvar Berg, a native of Norway who was pastor of the Old Brick Presbyterian Church in Sheffield, Ala., was the commencement speaker.

Hartley High School students to receive the first music scholarships awarded by the Friday Club IFWC were John Krebs, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Krebs, and Elsie Hahn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hahn. They would attend a summer workshop at the University of South Dakota.

The Hartley Adult Drama Club was sponsoring “An Evening of Plays and Pantomime” in the Little Theater at the high school. The plays to be presented were set in a Midwestern city, at a lighthouse somewhere on the Atlantic coast and in Russia in the 1890s.

• May 22, 1997

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn senior Ann Byers received the Iowa FFA Degree at the state FFA convention. She was the first female student from H-M-S to receive the degree.

GFWC Tritonia Club presented a total of $1,025 to community groups to support various projects. Recipients were H-M-S High School, Hartley Community Center, Hartley Betterment Club and Community Memorial Health Center.

Approximately 55 percent of voters in the H-M-S School District voted in favor of a $2.5 million bond issue. The measure fell short of the 60 percent supermajority required for passage. A total of 1,723 votes were cast in the special election.

Sixty-four seniors at H-M-S High School were candidates for graduation. Seniors to address the class were Melissa Kruse and Mike Wallinga.
