1972: Ingwer L. Hansen retires from post office

• May 29, 1947

The sale of poppies under the auspices of the Hartley American Legion Auxiliary set a new high when a total of $255.25 was collected. The previous high was in 1946 when $250 was received.

Donations to the cancer drive in Hartley fell a little short of the $350 quota. The amount of donations from organizations and individuals totaled $300. Response was considered generally good.

A white Memorial Day was a possibility as snow began falling the day before. By noon on May 29, more than an inch lay on the ground and the flakes were still coming down in true Christmas style.

Harris clinched the Northwest Iowa Conference championship in baseball by defeating Ashton, 17-0. Eugene Feauto limited Ashton to three hits while aiding his cause by hitting a home run and a triple.

• May 25, 1972

The Farmers Mutual Insurance Association of O’Brien County purchased the Park Hotel building and lot from Marie Tennant. The hotel had discontinued operation in late 1971. Farmers Mutual planned to erect a new office building on the site when final approval was granted. An auction of furnishings in the hotel would be held after June 1.

Ingwer L. Hansen, well known Hartley resident, was retiring from the U.S. Postal Department which he had served for nearly 42 years. He was first employed as a substitute clerk in the Hartley Post Office in 1930. He later served as clerk until he entered the armed forces in 1944. Upon his return in 1946, Hansen was transferred to a rural route. Along with his many other duties, he had served as secretary of the Chamber of Commerce since 1940.

• May 29, 1997

Meteorologist Paul Hagar, of KMEG TV in Sioux City, demonstrated various weather patterns to third graders at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Elementary. His visit was part of a special weather unit being taught in the third grade sections.

Three Hartley natives made statewide news in the Des Moines Register. “Iowa Boy” Chuck Offenburger in a column headlined “Where doctors get their start” wrote about how three young men – John Weber, Stuart Christenson and Mark Meyer – were among 167 graduates of the University of Iowa College of Medicine. All three credited their high school education with providing the foundation for their post-secondary success.

A temporary board of directors was formed to plan a licensed daycare facility in Hartley. It was to be a community-based, nonprofit organization. The board was looking for a possible site for the daycare and set a goal to have it open by fall.
