Serving O'Brien & Clay Counties
Republicans have most local options next Tuesday
Residents in Clay and O'Brien counties will be greeted by a smattering of competitive and non-competitive races when they fill out their ballots during the June 7 primary election.
Republicans will use the most ink when they cast their vote, as Democratic filings were few and far between. Locally, the most heated race has seven Republican candidates vying for three nominations to the Clay County Board of Supervisors.
All other competitive primary races are for statehouse nominations.
• O'Brien County (all Republicans; no Democrats filed): Incumbent District 4 Supervisor Dennis Vanden Hull, of Sheldon; incumbent District 5 Supervisor Dan Friedrichsen, of Sutherland; incumbent Treasurer Missy Hattermann, of Primghar; incumbent Recorder Susan Smith, of Primghar; and county attorney candidate Katie Morgan, of Archer.
• Clay County: Republican supervisor candidates Allen Batschelet, of Spencer, Shane Breidinger, of Spencer, Courtney DeLoss, of Spencer, Tim Hamrick, of Spencer, Paul Kassel, of Spencer, Doug Small, of Spencer, and incumbent Barry Anderson, of Greenville; Republican incumbent Treasurer LeAnn Black, of Spencer; Republican incumbent Recorder Sheila Weeks, of Spencer; incumbent Democratic County Attorney Travis Johnson, of Spencer, and Republican county attorney candidate Ashley Herrig, of Greenville.
• Iowa House District 5 (all of Osceola and O'Brien counties and parts of Cherokee and Buena Vista counties; 1 incumbent): Republicans Tom Kuiper, of Sibley, Zach Dieken, of Granville, and incumbent Rep. Dennis Bush, of Cherokee; no Democrats filed.
• Iowa Senate District 3 (all of Osceola, O'Brien and Buena Vista counties and parts of Cherokee and Clay counties; no incumbent): Republicans Lynn Evans, of Aurelia, and Anthony LaBruna, of Storm Lake; no Democrats filed.
• Iowa House District 10 (all of Dickinson and Palo Alto counties and portions of Clay and Kossuth counties, and City of Everly; 1 incumbent): Republican incumbent Rep. John Wills, of Spirit Lake; no Democrats filed.
• Iowa House District 6 (parts of Clay County, including Spencer and Royal, as well as portions of Buena Vista County, including Sioux Rapids and Storm Lake; 1 incumbent): Republican incumbent Rep. Megan Jones, of Sioux Rapids; Democrat James Eliason, of Storm Lake.
• Iowa Senate District 5 (all of Dickinson and Palo Alto counties and portions of Clay and Kossuth counties, and City of Everly; 1 incumbent): Republicans David Dow, of Emmetsburg, and incumbent Sen. Dave Rowley, of Spirit Lake; no Democrats filed.
Voting information on Election Day
In-person absentee voting at the county auditor's office is available through the day before the election, June 6. Polls open on Election Day at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.
Pre-registered voters are required to provide an approved form of identification at the polling place before receiving and casting a regular ballot. Voters who are not pre-registered – such as voters registering to vote on Election Day – and voters changing precincts must also provide proof of residence.
O'Brien County voting precinct locations are as follows:
Precinct 1: Carroll & Floyd Townships (including the City of Archer) will vote at the Crossroads Pavilion – 301 34th Avenue, Sheldon.
Precinct 2: Franklin Township (including the City of Sanborn) will vote at the Sanborn Community Bldg., 225 Main St., Sanborn.
Precinct 3: Hartley, Lincoln & Omega Townships (including the City of Hartley) will vote at the Hartley Community Bldg. 820 2nd St. NE, Hartley.
Precinct 4: Ward 1 of the City of Sheldon will vote at the Crossroads Pavilion – 301 34th Ave., Sheldon.
Precinct 5: Ward 2 of the City of Sheldon will vote at the Crossroads Pavilion – 301 34th Ave., Sheldon.
Precinct 6: Ward 3 of the City of Sheldon will vote at the Crossroads Pavilion – 301 34th Ave., Sheldon.
Precinct 7: Summit, Center, Dale & Highland Townships (including the City of Primghar) will vote at the O'Brien County Courthouse 155 S Hayes Ave., Primghar.
Precinct 8: Union, Baker & Caledonia Townships (including the City of Paullina) will vote at Paullina City Hall 127 S Main St., Paullina.
Precinct 9: Waterman, Grant & Liberty Townships (including the Cities of Calumet & Sutherland) will vote at the RL Johannsen Center 110 Ash St., Sutherland.

Douglas & Peterson Townships & City of Peterson: Peterson Community Center, 12 2nd St., Peterson.
Garfield & Herdland Townships & City of Webb: Webb Community Center, 306 Church St., Webb.
Lake & Freeman Townships & City of Dickens: Dickens Community Center, 100 Main St., Dickens.
Lincoln, Clay, Lone Tree & Riverton Townships & Cities of Rossie & Royal: Royal Community Center, 302 Main St., Royal.
Logan & Gillett Grove Townships & Cities of Greenville & Gillett Grove: Greenville Community Center, 105 Goulding Ave, Greenville.
Summit, Meadow & Sioux Townships & City of Fostoria: Clay Regional Events Center, 800 W 18th St., Spencer.
Waterford Township & City of Everly: Hap Ketelsen Community Center, 203 Main St., Everly.
City of Spencer Wards 1-5: Clay Regional Events Center, 800 W 18th St., Spencer.
For Tuesday's election, a combined precinct polling location will be available for voters living in Summit, Meadow and Sioux townships (including the City of Fostoria) and within the City of Spencer, Wards 1-5. These voters may vote at the Clay County Regional Events Center, 800 West 18th St, Spencer, Iowa.
Additionally on Tuesday, all contiguous areas of Lone Tree & Riverton Townships will vote at the Royal Community Center, 302 Main St, Royal, Iowa.
