Joyce E. Johnson, 81, Sloan

Joyce E. Johnson, 81 of Sloan, passed away Sunday, May 22, 2002 at her residence. Services will be held at the time of interment at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sergeant Bluff.

Joyce Elaine Selken was born on April 22, 1941 in Hartley, the daughter of Everett and Wilma (Hasse) Selken. At the end of her junior year the family moved to Vermillion, S.D., where she completed high school and graduated with the Class of 1959.

On Jan. 9, 1960, Joyce was married to Richard Arnold.

She worked part time at the University of South Dakota in the History Department. Upon moving to South Sioux City, Neb. in 1965, she worked 17 years at IBP for various departments after which she joined Nutra Flo in the transportation department and retired in June of 2005 to become The River Bank "Plant Manager."

On May 21, 2005, Joyce was married to Rodney Johnson on the banks of the Missouri River at the site of their not yet completed home.

Joyce enjoyed bird watching, doing crafts, making afghans, crocheting, gardening and photography. She is survived by her husband, Rodney, of Sloan; four daughters: Sherri (Wally Wallenberg) Christensen, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Brenda (Russ Kramer) Denny, of South

Sioux City, Neb.; Cynthia Arnold, of Dallas; and Nicole (Steve) Gustin, of Dakota City, Neb.; one stepdaughter, Tracy Baker, of Sioux City; one sister, Janelle (Carl) Teply, of Elk Point, S.D.; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Joyce is preceded in death by her parents; infant son, Richard Arnold, II; one grandchild, Kaylyn Denny; and two brothers, Jim Selken and Jerry Selken.
