• Rear-ends hayrack at 55 mph
Reduced visibility contributed to an accident that occurred at 9:50 p.m. on June 24, east of Nettle Avenue on U.S. Highway 18.
The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that Drew Michael Haack, 23, of Hospers, was driving a 2005 GMC Sierra eastbound on Highway 18, pulling a hayrack loaded with round bales. The pickup and hayrack were not visible due to lack of daylight, the rack was not equipped with reflective equipment or lights, and the pickup lights were not visible as the round bales were too wide.
A 2010 Chevrolet Impala driven by Isaac James Visser, 21, of Sanborn, was also eastbound on Highway 18. Visser saw a large dust cloud which prevented him from seeing the Sierra and hayrack, which were moving slowly partially on the shoulder. He failed to slow down even though he could not see what was in front of the dust cloud. The Impala rear-ended the hayrack at 55 mph.
Visser, along with Kaley Ruby Marie Mazur, 21, of Sanborn, and Madalyn Gayle Lorenz, 18, of Everly, were transported by Sheldon Ambulance to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center with minor/non-incapacitating injuries. Haack was not injured. Damage estimates were $10,000 for the Impala and $500 for cargo loss from the hayrack.
Haack was cited for Improper Rear Lamps and Failure to Display Reflective Device on Slow Moving Vehicle. Visser was cited for Following Too Close and a passenger in the Impala who was sitting on the lap of another front seat passenger was cited for Failure to Wear Seatbelt.

One passenger, Ashley Devoge, 45, of Chassell, Minn., was transported to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center by Sheldon Ambulance for treatment of a possible broken arm. The driver and two other passengers were not injured.
Damage to the Subaru was estimated at $20,000.
