Early S-N deadlines this week
There will be an early deadline for all ads and submitted news for the newspaper this week.
Friday, July 15 at 5 p.m. is the deadline for ads and submitted content for the July 21 Sentinel-News as well as next week’s Northwest Iowa Peach. Additionally, office hours on July 21 and July 22 will be from 8 a.m.-noon.
Ad and submitted copy deadlines will be normal for the July 28 publications: 5 p.m. on Friday, July 22 for the Northwest Iowa Peach; and Monday, July 25 at 5 p.m. for the Sentinel-News.
No pool, no problem
Beat the heat Thursday, July 21 from 6-8 p.m. at Fanning Field for an evening of fun for all ages.
Plan on getting wet. Activities include youth water fights, water balloons and sprinklers, as well as slip and slides for both younger and older kids. Participants are encouraged to bring a water gun or buckets.
Free pretzels with cheese, cheese nachos, ice pops and water will be served. Antique fire truck rides will also be available
If anyone is interested in a kick ball game or slow pitch softball game, contact a member of the fire department or City Hall at 928-2240.
More events may be added to the lineup, so watch the Hartley Firefighters Association Facebook page over the coming week.

Red’s Catering in downtown Hartley will be serving two meal options on Wednesday, July 20.

Grassley’s staff to hold office hours
Sen. Chuck Grassley’s (R-Iowa) regional directors will hold traveling office hours in 10 counties around Iowa during the week of July 18. Iowans seeking assistance regarding a personal issue with a federal agency or wishing to share views on matters of federal policy may stop by during the scheduled hours.
Grassley is represented by his regional directors, Fred Schuster and Jacob Bossman. The senator will not be in attendance. In O’Brien County, office hours will be held on Wednesday, July 20 from 1-2 p.m., in the Sheldon Community Building’s SCDC Board Room (upstairs) at 416 9th St., Sheldon.
Grassley’s state offices regularly help constituents contact federal agencies to resolve problems with Social Security payments, military service matters, immigration cases and other issues. Iowans can also seek assistance via Grassley’s website.
Food distribution July 20 at Trinity UCC
The Food Bank of Iowa’s mobile pantry program will be conducted on Wednesday, July 20, from 4-6 p.m. at Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley. The program is available free of charge and geared toward individuals in need of food assistance.
Participants are asked to stay in their vehicles and line up on the east side of the parking lot. The food will be brought to you as you drive under the canopy.

Bring your lunch to the Clay County Heritage Center in Spencer at noon on the dates below to learn about different history topics and see unique objects stored in the facility’s collection.

Regular hours at Royal library
Hours at the Royal Public Library are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 3-5 p.m.; and Tuesday and Saturday, 9:30-11:30 a.m.
Hope Lutheran food pantry hours
Current hours for the food pantry at Hope Lutheran Church in Everly are Wednesdays, 1-5 p.m. Everyone is allowed to come in and pick out their food, but masks are required.
Flag disposal ceremony at fair
The American Legion Posts of O’Brien County are having a dignified disposal of unserviceable flags ceremony during the O’Brien County Fair on Monday, July 25 at 5 p.m., at the horse arena on the fairgrounds. Anyone with a flag to be disposed of is invited to either deliver them to your American Legion Post or to the ceremony at the fair.
Farmland leasing meetings scheduled during August
Farmland leasing meetings for agriculture property owners, tenants, ag business representatives and lenders will be held throughout Northwest Iowa in early August.
Each workshop will discuss current farmland value and lease rate trends; methods for determining 2023 fair ag rents; conservation practices; farmland lease communication and legalities, including how to write and terminate a lease; and other important ag topics that contribute to key farm management decisions.
Upcoming workshop options include:
• Wednesday, Aug. 3, 6 p.m., Osceola County Extension Office, 121 9th Street, Sibley; Preregister to (712) 754-3648.
• Thursday, Aug. 11, 9 a.m., 4-H Auditorium, Clay County Fairgrounds, 800 West 18th Street, Spencer; Preregister to (712) 262-2264.
• Monday, Aug. 15, 9 a.m., Dickinson County Extension Office, 1600 15th Street, Spirit Lake; Preregister to (712) 336-3488.
Meetings are approximately 2-1/2 hours in length and all registrants receive a leasing arrangement book as well as access to research-based resources from ISU Extension and Outreach. Specific topic depth and breadth at each meeting will vary to best suit participants’ needs and wants, but individuals need only attend one meeting.
There is a $20 per individual or $30 per couple preregistration fee for those who preregister to the Extension office hosting the meeting at least two days prior to the workshop date.

NCC summer commencement is July 22
Commencement exercises at Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon will be held on Friday, July 22. There are 95 graduates in the summer 2022 class.
The Radiologic Technology Pinning Ceremony will be held in Building A, Room 116/119 at 10:30 a.m.
The commencement ceremony will be held in the Northwest Iowa Lifelong Learning and Recreation Center at 1:30 p.m. The commencement address will be given by Carson Marco, of Sibley, a Powerline Technology graduate. The Student Leadership Award will also be presented.
Knitting program July 16 at Hartley library
Would you like to learn the fundamentals of knitting? Hartley Public Library will be hosting a knitting boot camp on Saturday, July 16, at 9:30 a.m. Have all your questions answered and be instructed by very experienced knitters who can help you start a journey to be a master knitter. Not too late for buying HHS reunion tickets
That’s right; Hartley Summer Celebration is fast approaching, on Aug. 5, 6 and 7.
On Saturday, Aug. 6, the Hartley High School All-school Reunion will be held at the Hartley Community Center. Happy hour is from 5-6:30 p.m. with supper to follow. A catered meal of roast beef and pork loin will be served.
After the meal, a dance with The Cruisers will be held from 7:30-10:30 p.m. This band features two HHS graduates, Phil Sweeney and Mike Anderson.
Tickets are available for $25 for the meal and dance, or $10 for just the dance. A limited amount of tickets for the meal will be available at the door, so you should have them purchased by July 30.
The Hartley Community Center will be open at 2 p.m. for people to visit and keep cool.
