5K glow run/walk event at Mill Creek

The O’Brien County Suicide Prevention Coalition and O’Brien County Conservation are hosting a 5K glow run/walk event on Saturday, July 30, at Mill Creek State Park in Paullina. Proceeds from this event will aid the coalition’s efforts to raise awareness, provide training and education, and eliminate stigma.

Race day registration will begin at 7:30 p.m. and the event will begin at 9 p.m. During the event the community is invited to join the coalition in lighting lanterns. Lanterns represent those who have been lost to suicide, those who are affected by suicide and for those who may be struggling with thoughts of suicide.

The O’Brien County Suicide Prevention Coalition was formed in the fall of 2021, when a group of individuals came together to discuss a common concern in O’Brien County, increased suicide attempts and suicide deaths. The suicide rate in the county has increased by 10 percent and is much higher than state average. The average number of youths who reported that they considered suicide in the last 12 months is also higher than the state average.

The coalition believes there is great importance in developing intentional suicide prevention and response in O’Brien County, and aims to have a positive impact through outreach, education, training and eliminating stigma. Resources will be available at the race and each entrant will receive a resource bag.

For more information please visit the O’Brien County Suicide Prevention Coalition Facebook page.

Derecho assistance deadline approaching

Qualifying individuals affected by the July 5 derecho that barreled through northwest Iowa are on a deadline to take advantage of certain benefits afforded to them.

Four counties, including O’Brien County, were included in a disaster declaration issued by Gov. Kim Reynolds on July 6. Also on the list were Emmet, Hancock and Winnebago counties. The governor’s proclamation allows state resources to be utilized to respond to, and recover from, the effects of the storm.

The Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program provides grants of up to $5,000 for households with incomes up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level for a family of three. Grants are available for home or car repairs, replacement of clothing or food, and temporary housing expenses. Original receipts are required for those seeking reimbursement for actual expenses related to storm recovery.

The grant application and instructions are available on the Iowa Department of Human Services website at https://dhs.iowa.gov/disaster-assistance-programs. Potential applicants have 45 days from the date of the proclamation to submit a claim.

The Disaster Case Management Program addresses serious needs related to disaster-related hardship, injury, or adverse conditions. Disaster case managers work with clients to create a disaster recovery plan and provide guidance, advice, and referral to obtain a service or resource. There are no income eligibility requirements for this program; it closes 180 days from the date of the governor’s proclamation.

For information on the Disaster Case Management Program, contact your local community action association or visit http://www.iowacommunityaction.org.
