Hunting down history

Everly Heritage Museum holds scavenger hunt

As part of the Everly's Community Days celebration, the Everly Heritage Museum sponsored a "Selfie Scavenger Hunt".

The hunt provided participants with clues to finding four historic sites in Everly. They then went to the site, took a selfie at each one and returned to the museum. The four sites included the one-room Sunnybrook school, Veterans Memorial cannon, Freedom Rock and the Moneta School entrance stone. All hunters received a coupon for a free ice cream cone at the Quik Spot and an entry into a drawing for three cash prizes.

The lucky winners of the cash prizes were: Amanda Johnson, $25; Hunter Pearson, $50; and Ellie Curran, $75. The museum committee was very happy with the turnout, and many people also toured the exhibits during the day.

As part of the celebration, the museum also launched its ARTShare project with four paintings donated by artist and Everly High School graduate Mark Gould. The program seeks to make fine art pieces available to a wider audience by loaning them to community members to exhibit in their home or business for a period of six months. At the end of that period, the art will be returned to EHM and another drawing will be held to determine the recipients for the next six-month period.

Gould is a well-known artist who lives in New Mexico and exhibits in galleries throughout the United States.

"The museum is thrilled to kick off the program with such an accomplished and sought after artist, and hopes to encourage other current or former Everly artists to participate in the program," said Connie Goeken, museum committee chair.

Gould's paintings will be exhibited for the next three months in the museum, State Bank & Insurance – Everly, Everly Public Library and the Everly City Hall. Anyone may register at those locations to participate in the drawing, which will be held in early December.

Through all of its programming, the Everly Heritage Museum seeks to educate and entertain, and to promote the arts, history and culture of our community.
