• Two from Mississippi arrested on drug charges
While on routine patrol on Aug. 27, a deputy of the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office observed a Ford F250 pickup accelerate in an aggressive manner on Highway 10 in front of the Casey’s convenience store in Paullina. The pickup then turned onto Redwing Avenue and allegedly accelerated in an aggressive manner and continued at a high rate of speed.
The deputy conducted a traffic stop and identified the driver as Jon David Montesdeoca, 21, of Laurel, Miss., and a passenger as Eduardo Murrieta Cardov, 26, of Laurel, Miss. Montesdeoca was found in possession of a loaded handgun that was allegedly stolen in Mississippi. He was placed under arrest for the stolen handgun, and the pickup was towed to a secure location until a search warrant could be obtained.
After the warrant was issued, the following items were seized as evidence from a hidden compartment located inside the pickup: 27 marijuana roaches, 9mm ammunition, glass marijuana bong with burnt residue, small quantity of marijuana, prescription medication and a small quantity of methamphetamine.
As a result of the investigation, Montesdeoca was charged with Possession of Controlled Substance-Methamphetamine, 1st Offense; Possession of Controlled Substance-Marijuana, 1st Offense; Theft-4th Degree (stolen firearm); Possession of Drug Paraphernalia; Speed (83 mph in 55 mph zone); and Reckless Driving.
Cordov was charged with Possession of Controlled Substance-Methamphetamine, 1st Offense; Possession of Controlled Substance-Marijuana, 1st Offense; and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
• Driver fall asleep at wheel
The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that Juden Therell Elijah Porter, 23, of Sheldon, was driving westbound in the 6100 mile of 360th Street at 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 28 when he fell asleep. His 2008 GMC Yukon entered the north ditch and struck a field drive before coming to rest.
Porter was not injured. Damage to the Yukon was estimated at $6,600. Porter was cited for Failure to Maintain Control.
• Vehicles collide in construction zone
Three vehicles were involved in an accident that occurred on U.S. Highway 18, at 8:32 a.m. on Aug. 29.
The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that a 2007 Ford F350 driven by William Glenn Collins, 39, of Sheldon, and a 2013 Mack tractor/semi-trailer driven by Joel Thomas Settelmeyer, 61, of Hickson, N.D., were stopped in traffic in a construction zone where Highway 18 was reduced to one lane. Advanced warning signs were posted as were flagman signs. Nicole Marie Philiph, 27, of Ocheyedan, was also eastbound on Highway 18 and failed to see the stopped traffic due to the sun blinding her. Her 2012 Ford Explorer struck the back of the F350, went around it and stopped wedged next to the semi-trailer.
No injuries were reported. Damage estimates were $20,000 to the Explorer and $5,000 to the F350. The tractor/semi-trailer, owned by Mid America Steel of Fargo, N.D., was not damaged. Philiph was cited for Failure to Stop in Assured Clear Distance.
• Oversized load damaged on Highway 18
The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that a 2001 Peterbilt tractor/semi-trailer driven by Franklin Carter Huss, 61, of Spencer, was westbound on Highway 18 at 9:15 a.m. on Aug. 29. The Peterbilt was pulling an oversize load with a proper permit.
As Huss entered the construction zone in Hartley, the lane narrowed which caused the tractor/semi-trailer to strike some traffic cones. The cones went under the trailer and took out air lines, causing it to sink onto the rear tires. Huss stated there were no width restriction signs prior to entering the construction zone and no alternate route was offered for oversized loads.
Damage to the semi-trailer was estimated at $10,000.
