1997: Hartley youngster wins gold in pedal pull

• Sept. 11, 1947

Otto Kruse, of Hartley, went by plane to Oakland, Calif. to enjoy a 10-day visit in the Alfred Kruse home. From there he planned to go by train or bus to Montana to purchase Western sheep and lambs for feeding purposes. The sheep would be shipped to Hartley where Kruse had facilities to handle them.

Mrs. Lillian Eichner, of Spencer, sold the Eichner Café to H.S. Shellito and A.M. Johnson. Mrs. Eichner was the daughter of Mrs. Martha Hopfe, of Hartley. Since the death of her husband, Mrs. Eichner operated the café and built up a nice business.

F.E. Frisbee, of Sheldon, was elected president of the O’Brien County Historical Society. There were approximately 20 members present at the annual meeting. H.J. Grotewohl, of Hartley, was among those chosen to serve on the society’s board of directors.

• Sept. 7, 1972

Total enrollment at the Hartley Community School fell from 735 students in 1971-72 to 708 for the new year. Enrollment in grades K-8 edged up slightly, from 457 students to 459, while high school enrollment for 1972-73 declined from 278 students to 249.

Don Brigham, son of Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Brigham, represented the Hartley FFA Chapter as a grandstand usher at the Iowa State Fair. Accompanying him to Des Moines were FFA members from Everly, Lake Park and Spencer.

Hartley Community Memorial Hospital and Mann Memorial Wing again received the Joint Commission Seal of Accreditation. Standards adopted by the commission when surveyed were new and revised. The Seal of Accreditation was patients’ protection against hit-or-miss standards at the hospital.

Dora (Nissen) Olhausen was honored by her family at a 100th birthday reception at the Hartley Community Center. She was presented with a biographical sketch compiled by her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Gerald Olhausen, with the assistance of Dora’s granddaughter, Sharon Olhausen Chester.

Wally Tschopp was re-elected to serve a three-year term on the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn School Board. The incumbent director from District 5 received 332 votes compared to 64 votes for challenger Bill Hibbing.

Seth Erichsen, son of Alan and Lori Erichsen of Hartley, placed first in the 10-year-old division at the Iowa Championship Pedal Pulls. The statewide event was held at the Marshall County Fairgrounds. Seth qualified to compete at the Nationals at Omaha, Neb.
