New royalty reigning at H-M-S

There's new royalty reigning over the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Community School District.

Kooper Ebel and Abby Kunzman were named king and queen during coronation Tuesday night. The duo was selected from the 10-member Homecoming court by their peers.

Kunzman, of Hartley, is the daughter of Jill and Chad Kunzman. She is involved in volleyball, golf, softball, band, jazz band, student council and National Honor Society.

She plans to attend the University of Iowa to become a dermatologist.

Ebel, of Hartley, is the son of Korey and Jonna Ebel. He is involved in football, basketball, and track and field. He plans to play football at Iowa State University next fall.

Hartley chiropractor and H-M-S alumnus Andy Schierholz provided the pre-crowning address. A member of the Class of 1995, he said his time at H-M-S prepared him for the future. He urged students to try new things while in high school because you never know what activities will change your future.

"Stand up and get involved in school and the communities," he said. "Keep an open mind and be willing to listen to different opinions...listen more than you speak."

The crowning ceremony was the first big event of Homecoming week, which culminates Friday when the Hawks face MMCRU at Peterson Field at 7 p.m. A community pep rally and parade are scheduled earlier that day at 12:45 p.m. and 2:15 p.m., respectively. The pep rally will be held in the H-M-S Event Center while the parade will go through downtown Hartley.
