Top 2 volleyball teams in WEC sweep H-M-S
Taking on two rated War Eagle Conference volleyball teams was the challenge for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn volleyball team last week, and those teams lived up to their reputations with straight-set victories.
H-M-S faced Unity Christian [Class 3A No. 7] at Orange City on Sept. 27, losing in straight sets by scores of 13-25, 11-25 and 8-25. The Hawks stayed close early in the first two sets but could not match the Knights' strength. Unity Christian broke out to a quick lead in the final set and the final outcome was never in doubt.
The Knights had a 31-11 advantage in kills and 13 ace serves.
Kylee Schiphoff had four kills, Abby Kunzman had three and Abby Douma had two. Frankie Mohni finished with eight set assists.
Elise Haack recorded a solo block while Douma and Kunzman each had a block assist. Abby Otto led the back row with five digs, Mohni had four, Kinsey Schirmer, Eliza Tewes and Schiphoff each had three, and Kunzman added two.
At the serving line, Schiphoff was 5-of-5, Kunzman and Schirmer were 4-of-4, Haack was 4-of-5, Morgan Grooters was 3-of-3, Mohni was 4-of-6 and Emily Mutombo was 2-of-2. Schirmer had H-M-S's only ace.
• vs. Hinton
Class 2A No. 8 Hinton was H-M-S's next opponent and the result and set scores were similar to those in the Unity Christian match. Hinton swept the Hawks by scores of 25-11, 25-13 and 25-6 on Sept. 29 at Hinton.
Hinton won the battle at the net, recording 45 kills on 69 attacks. Kunzman had five of H-M-S's 13 kills, Douma had four and Haack added two. Mohni put up 12 set assists.
On defense, Otto had six digs, Mutombo had five, Mohni had four and Haack had three.
The Hawks had a subpar night at the serving line (81.2 percent). Haack converted 6-of-7 attempts, Mohni was 5-of-6, Kunzman and Mutombo were 4-of-5 and Otto was 3-of-3.
"We faced the Top 2 teams in the conference. As a team you look at what you can do to improve after those types of matches," said Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese. "We know moving forward we need to continue to work on our quickness in responding to the other team's offense."
H-M-S (7-11, 2-5) plays in the Harris-Lake Park tournament on Oct. 8 and concludes the regular season on Oct. 11 at MMCRU and Oct. 13 at Akron-Westfield.
