National Fire Prevention Week runs Oct. 9-16
October boasts a myriad of events that gain our attention: Full moons, harvest, Halloween, Homecomings and autumn in all of its beauty.
However, there is one week of the month that deserves pause for a significantly serious reason – National Fire Prevention Week.
National Fire Prevention Week runs from Oct. 9-16 and is celebrated nationally throughout the United States and Canada. The first Fire Prevention Week was celebrated in 1922, making 2022 its 100th year of existence.
The purpose of Fire Prevention Week is to educate children, adults and teachers on how to properly protect themselves and stay safe in case of a fire. Members of Royal Fire Department joined Clay Central/Everly Elementary students and staff on Tuesday to teach the ins and outs of fire safety. Not only were the students given safety materials and literature to take home for their families, but they were also taught the invaluable practice of creating their own at-home safety plan to escape if ever a fire were to occur.
Making sure that the entire family is on the same page, selecting a universal meeting place and knowing who to contact is crucial in surviving a fire. The National Fire Prevention Association slogan, "Fire won't wait. Plan your escape," reiterates that a plan is a must.
When discussing the importance of working smoke detectors in the home, Royal Fire Chief Matt Goyette said it perfectly "Batteries are cheap. You guys are priceless."
