• Respond to field fire
Hartley firemen responded to a soybean field fire at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 2. Stubble in a field located on 390th Street was on fire when they arrived. Water was used to put out the flames.
The cause is believed to have been something hot on the combine that left burning embers in the field. The combine also started on fire but was cleaned out before serious damage resulted.
• Trucks collide on dusty gravel road
The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office investigated an accident that occurred at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 7. The report stated that a 1991 International 9000 truck driven by Keith Roger Kruse, 66, of Everly, was southbound in the 3900 mile of Yellow Avenue, as was a 2006 International tractor/semi-trailer driven by Joseph Michael Caven, 64, of Spencer, which was behind Kruse. Due to significant dust from the gravel road, neither driver saw the other and their trucks collided as Kruse attempted to turn into a field drive.
Both drivers reported possible injuries but were not transported. Estimated damage for the semi owned by MGP Farms LLC, of Spencer, was $8,700. The damage estimate for the truck owned by Kruse Farms, of Everly, was $5,200.
• Vehicles collide in Clay County
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office received multiple reports of a two-vehicle accident with injuries that occurred at 6:55 a.m. on Oct. 6.
The report stated a 2019 Dodge Durango driven by Rebecca Worshek, 37, of Hull, was southbound in the 3400 mile of 240th Avenue, and a 2005 Nissan Sentra driven by a 17-year-old juvenile female from Spencer was northbound in the 3500 mile of 240th Avenue. The juvenile failed to see the Durango as she attempted to turn west onto 350th Street, entering the southbound lane. Worshek’s vehicle T-boned the Sentra which was pushed into a field on the southwest corner of the intersection, knocking down a stop sign.
The juvenile was transported to Spencer Hospital for treatment while Worshek refused assistance at the scene. Damage estimates were $20,000 for the Durango and $8,000 for the Nissan which is owned by David Keith. Damage to the lighted stop sign is estimated at $2,500.
The sheriff’s office reported a citation for Failure to Yield Upon Left Turn would be issued to the juvenile.
Also assisting at the scene were the Spencer Police Department, Dickens Fire Department, Spencer Fire Department, Spencer Hospital Ambulance Service and Clay County Secondary Roads Department.
