Meals planned to honor veterans

The Hartley American Legion Auxiliary will host a breakfast for local veterans and their spouses or other guests on Friday, Nov. 11 from 8-9:30 a.m., at the Legion building. A meal featuring buscuits and sausage gravy, coffee, and juice will be served.

Additionally, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hartley will hold a Veterans Day supper later that evening for local veterans and their families. The meal will be served from 5-6:30 p.m.

Veterans’ dinner Nov. 13 in Royal

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 248, of Royal, invites all veterans and their families to a dinner at noon on Sunday, Nov. 13, at the Royal Community Building. Please bring a hot dish, salad or dessert to share. Table service and drink will be provided.

Trinity Holiday Fair & Auction is Saturday

Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley will host its annual holiday fair and auction on Saturday, Nov. 12. A bake sale and craft sale will begin at 9:30 a.m., with a meal and auction to be held later in the day.

Caring Rose Week

Jackie’s Floral Center in Hartley is participating in Caring Rose Week Nov. 7-12. Customers who donate two cans of food for the hungry will receive a dozen roses for only $10.

Only non-expired food will be accepted.

Poetry recital is Nov. 17 at HPL

The Hartley Poets Group will hold its annual fall poetry recital on Thursday, Nov. 17 from 2-4 p.m., at the Hartley Public Library.

St. John’s Lutheran Church in May City will hold its annual Harvest Festival on Saturday, Nov. 12 from 11:30-1 p.m., with an auction to follow.

In Melvin, the American Legion is planning a brunch on Sunday, Nov. 13 from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at the Legion building.

Food distribution at Trinity UCC

The Food Bank of Iowa’s mobile pantry program will be conducted on Wednesday, Nov. 16, starting at 4 p.m. at Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley. The program is available free of charge and geared toward individuals in need of food assistance.

Participants are asked to stay in their vehicles and line up on the east side of the parking lot. The food will be brought to you as you drive under the canopy.

Movie, doc to be shown at HPL

Hartley Public Library will be hosting a classic movie matinee on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. Everyone is welcome to view “A Streetcar Named Desire.” Snacks will be provided.

The library will also host a screening of the documentary “Dinosaur 13” on Monday, Nov. 21 at 6:30 p.m. The documentary details the incredible true story of a T-Rex fossil named “Sue” that was found in South Dakota.

Two years after the discovery of “Sue,” the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton found to date, government officials seized the remains and claimed that “Sue” was stolen from federal land. Paleontologists, landowners and the U.S. government turned against each other to all stake their claim to this legendary dinosaur.

LifeServe Blood Center is conducting a drive at Southpark Mall, 901 11th Street SW in Spencer, on Monday, Nov. 21 from 2-6 p.m.

Regular hours at Royal library

Hours at the Royal Public Library are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 3-5 p.m.; and Tuesday and Saturday, 9:30-11:30 a.m.

Food pantry at Hope Lutheran

Current hours for the food pantry at Hope Lutheran Church in Everly are Wednesdays, 1-5 p.m. Everyone is allowed to come in and pick out their food, but masks are required.
