Glenn Wehrkamp, 95, Waverly

Glenn Wehrkamp, 95, of Waverly, formerly of Hartley, died on Friday, Nov. 25, 2022, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.

Glenn was born Feb. 13, 1927 in Clarinda, the son of Albert Charles and Leila Iola (Shum) Wehrkamp. He was baptized on March 13, 1927 and confirmed in 1941, at St. John Lutheran Church in Clarinda. Glenn graduated from Clarinda High School and then attended Clarinda Junior College, Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville, Mo., Utah State in Logan, Utah and the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.

Glenn began his teaching/coaching career in Lake Park from 1948-1952, and Dunkerton from 1952-1956. Glenn was united in marriage to Yvonne Marie Happel at Immanuel Lutheran Church-Klinger, rural Readlyn, on Aug. 5, 1956. The couple made their home in Sheffield where Glenn continued to teach and coach from 1956-1961. In 1961, the family moved to Hartley, where Glenn was a math instructor, head track and basketball coach, and started the girls' softball program.

While at Hartley his students won the Tri-State Math Competition for 25 years in a row, a feat he was very proud of. Glenn was also a referee for all sports and was a member of the Iowa Referees Hall of Fame. Glenn retired in 1989 and remained in Hartley until moving to Waverly in 2001.

Glenn was a faithful member of St. John Lutheran Church in Waverly. Glenn was a member of Clarinda 4-H, Clarinda FFA for seven years, ISEA for 65 years, and a 14-year member of the Hartley Lions Club. He enjoyed playing bridge, softball and golf.

Glenn is survived by his loving wife, Yvonne Wehrkamp, of Waverly; one son, Donald (Sheila) Wehrkamp, of Lenexa, Kan .; three daughters: Pamela (Steve) Egli, of Waverly; Beth (Bob) McWilliams, of Fort Lupton, Colo .; and Kristine (Frank) Wehrkamp Herman, of Pillager, Minn .; two grandchildren, Macen Egli and RyAnna McWilliams; three great-grandchildren; and many step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his son, William Wehrkamp; a brother, Charles Wehrkamp; and two sisters, Jane Wehrkamp and Neola Wehrkamp.

Celebration of Life Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 1, at St. John Lutheran Church in Waverly, with Rev. Jon Ellingworth officiating. Burial will follow in the Harlington Cemetery at Waverly. Visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until service time on Thursday.
