Pioneers finish eighth overall at Emmetsburg tourney
Okoboji/HMS crowned one champion and had two other wrestlers finish in the Top 3 during the Bob Roethler Invitational, hosted by Emmetsburg on Dec. 10.
The Pioneers’ Noah Strantz won the 160-pound title with a 5-3 decision in the championship match. Dylan Jones was runner-up at 126, losing a 14-0 major decision to the champion, and Tyce Hanson won a 9-4 decision in the third-place match at 132.
Three wrestlers from H-M-S competed. After an opening-round bye at 182 pounds, James Gellerman lost by fall in 3:30 to Morgan Dalen, of Estherville-Lincoln Central. He then pinned Kael Brandt, of Spencer, in 1:07; lost by fall in 1:43 to Evan Jalas, of LeMars; and won the fifth-place match by pinning Brock Good, of Forest City, in 4:08.
Wrestling at 195 pounds, Ethan Wiersma lost a 9-7 decision to Hunter Sunkle, of Forest City, but came back to pin Trenedy Allen, of West Bend-Mallard, in 1:09, and Ethan Lawson, of Lake Mills, in 1:03. After another win by fall over Peyton Klein, of Forest City, in 4:43, Wiersma won the seventh-place match by pinning Logan Sandman, of Spirit Lake Park, in 2:52.
Nathan Stofferan wrestled at 106 pounds. He lost his opening match by fall in 3:45 to Joseph Peterson, of Emmetsburg, and lost again, 4-1, to David Henry, of LeMars.
Other Okoboji/HMS place finishers were Sam Pas, fourth at 220 pounds; Alex Rouse, sixth at 145; Keyshawn Smith, sixth at 285; and Mike Gonnerman, eighth at 120.
Spencer topped the team standings with 216.5 points, LeMars was second with 190 and Estherville-Lincoln Central was third with 177.5. The home squad finished with 177 points, followed by Lake Mills 169.5, Eagle Grove 161.5, Pocahontas Area 155.5, Okoboji/HMS 141, Storm Lake 94, Forest City 92.5, West Bend-Mallard 46, Fort Dodge St. Edmond 44 and Spirit Lake Park 43.
Last Thursday’s double dual at Hinton was cancelled. The Pioneers are scheduled to wrestle in a Siouxland Conference double dual at West Lyon on Dec. 15 and close out the pre-Christmas schedule with a tournament at Spencer on Dec. 17.
