Applications for additional spending authority were the main items of business for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn school board members during a brief session on Monday.
H-M-S is applying to the School Budget Review Committee for modified supplemental amount (MSA) totaling $108,405 for open-enrolled out students. The district is paying tuition this budget year for 15 students who were not included in the 2021-22 certified enrollment count.
Additional MSA is also being requested for providing instructional services to limited English proficient (LEP) students being served beyond the five years of weightings. The district has two students in the intermediate test level, which qualifies it for $3,118 in additional spending authority.
H-M-S does not qualify for additional spending authority for increased enrollment. The 2022-23 certified enrollment is 641, which is a decline of one student from last year.
The board also issued contracts to Megan Ten Kley, PK associate; Shelby Scroggin, elementary associate; Jenni Van Otterloo, Title I teacher providing services to Sanborn Christian School; Austin Alexander, middle school social studies (2023-24); and Lindsey Meyers, middle school head softball coach.
The elementary book fair was a success. Principal Ashley Benz said the gross sales total was the highest to date. Proceeds allowed teachers to purchase books for their classrooms.
Principal Nate Hemiller reported that mini-courses being offered at the high school are well-received by students.
"It is nice to see our students who are not assigned to intervention learning some life skills or about something that interests them," he said.
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is a topic for the high school professional development groups. Hemiller explained that SEL is being discussed to help teachers meet the social and emotional needs of students while teaching content.
