Mary Plagmann, 73, of Humboldt, passed away from anaplastic thyroid cancer on Jan. 7, 2023 at the Mercy One Hospital in Sioux City. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 11, at Zion Lutheran Church in Humboldt, with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery at Alta. The Lentz Funeral Home in Humboldt assisted with the arrangements.
Mary Ruth Porter, the daughter of Wayne and Ruth (Steig) Porter, was born on Nov. 3, 1949 in Primghar. She graduated from Hartley High School in 1968. Mary then graduated from Spencer School of Business and her first job was working in the welfare department at Storm Lake.
Mary was united in marriage with Larry Plagmann on Jan. 10, 1970, in Storm Lake. The couple moved to Cherokee and then to Humboldt. Mary worked as a receptionist at Chantland's and then became a homemaker.
Mary was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Cub Scout leader for four years and the Iowa World Organization of China Painters, having served as a president. Mary enjoyed painting china with local, state and national friends, reading history and volunteering at the Humboldt County Historical Society as a tour guide and board member. She had a great love for flowers. Mary loved being a homemaker and taking care of her family while Larry worked as an over the road truck driver. Mary was a loving wife and mother, and cherished her time with her grandchildren.
Left to cherish Mary's memory are her husband of 53 years, Larry; sons, Mark (Cherry) Plagmann, of Cedar Rapids, Neb.; and Garrett (Kathleen) Plagmann, of Deland, Fla.; and grandchildren, Navarre, Eli and Ethan Plagmann. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorials may be made in Mary's name and directed to the Humboldt County Historical Society or Moffitt Animal Shelter.
