Opponents extend girls' losing streak

H-M-S comes up short in 3 road losses

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn was on the road last week for three girls' basketball games and came up short in all of them.

The Hawks ended the week with a 55-45 loss to MMCRU in War Eagle Conference play on Jan. 13 at Marcus.

A slow start to both halves proved to be H-M-S's downfall. The deficit was 17-11 after the first quarter but the Hawks were able to reduce it to 26-23 at half time. MMCRU took control of the contest in the third quarter, outscoring H-M-S by nine to build a 39-27 lead. The Hawks' 18 points in the final period could only cut the deficit to 10.

Abby Douma scored 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the floor. Other point totals were Moriah Otto with six, Elise Haack and Kylee Schiphoff with five, Emily Mutombo with four and Gracie Knobloch and Frankie Mohni with three. The Hawks made 36 percent of their shots from the floor (18-of-50) and only 5-of-11 attempts at the foul line.

Mutombo was H-M-S's leading rebounder with eight while Schiphoff had seven. Knobloch contributed five steals.

• vs. Sheldon

Sheldon handed H-M-S a 53-42 loss on Jan. 9. H-M-S scored late in the first quarter to take the lead and held it until the midpoint of the second quarter. Neither team could gain an advantage until late in the half, when Sheldon scored five straight points to take a 25-20 lead into the break.

The Orabs led by as many as 12 points in the third quarter but H-M-S rallied to get to within 43-39 with four minutes to play. Sheldon then closed out the game with a 9-3 run to secure the win.

Scoring for H-M-S included Otto with 16 points, Schiphoff with 10, Haack with seven, Douma with five, and Mohni and Mutombo with two points each.

Haack and Otto each grabbed nine rebounds, Douma had six, Mutombo had five and Schiphoff added four. Mutombo also had three steals and two assists, and Schiphoff came up with three steals.

• vs. West Bend-Mallard

Despite equaling their best offensive output of the season, the Hawks could not overcome an early deficit during a 65-59 loss to West Bend-Mallard on Jan. 12.

The Wolverines' six-point lead at the end of the first quarter proved to be the difference. H-M-S trailed 31-24 at half time and could only outscore WB-M by one point over the final 16 minutes.

Douma and Knobloch were the leading scorers with 17 and 14 points, respectively. Otto added eight points, Schiphoff scored seven, Haack scored six, and Mohni and Mutombo each scored three.

Mutombo had seven rebounds and four steals; Otto also grabbed seven rebounds; Haack had five rebounds and two steals; Douma had four rebounds; Schiphoff contributed three rebounds and two assists; and Knobloch had four steals, two assists and two rebounds.

No. 4 (1A) Remsen St. Mary's will visit H-M-S on Jan. 19 for a makeup game. The Hawks will also host West Sioux on Jan. 20 and a rematch with MMCRU on Jan. 24.
