• Charged with driving while revoked

A Clay County deputy initiated a traffic stop for a violation in the 4700 mile of Highway 71, at 3:53 p.m. on Jan. 15. According to the report, Joseph Hartzell, 40, of Spencer, had a revoked driver’s license. He was placed under arrest and was allegedly in possession of a marijuana pipe with marijuana in it.

Hartzell was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance-Marijuana (3rd offense), an aggravated misdemeanor; Driving While Revoked, a serious misdemeanor; and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Speeding, simple misdemeanors. He was released on bond.

• Hits snow in median

Dennis Abel, 75, of Milford, was driving northbound in 2700 mile of Highway 71, at 3:05 p.m. on Jan. 18, when he lost control of his 2009 Chevrolet Silverado due to strong winds and slippery road conditions. The pickup entered the median, struck some hard-packed snow and flipped, coming to rest facing southeast.

The report stated that Abel was transported to Spencer Hospital by Spencer Ambulance. Damage to the Silverado was estimated at $17,500. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, Fostoria Fire and Rescue, Spencer Ambulance and Bud’s Service.

• Vehicle rolls in ditch

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that at 5:45 p.m. on Jan. 18, Pierce Dayne Van Sloten, 22, of Hartley, was eastbound in the 6100 mile of Highway 18/320th Street when his 2006 Chevrolet K1500 hit a patch of snow and entered the south ditch, rolling onto its top.

Van Sloten was not injured. Damage to the pickup was estimated at $3,900.
