H-M-S girls struggle to score in 3 losses
Getting any consistent scoring proved a difficult proposition for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls' basketball team during three games last week.
Hosting Remsen St. Mary's [1A No. 4] on Jan. 23, H-M-S was held to single digits in three of the four quarters of a 60-28 loss. St. Mary's built a 30-10 lead by half time. Despite scoring 12 points in the third quarter, H-M-S trailed by 30 heading into the final eight minutes.
Emily Mutombo scored 11 points and Kylee Schiphoff scored seven. Adding two points each were Abby Douma, Elise Haack, Gracie Knobloch, Addison Sheeler and Eliza Tewes. The Hawks only attempted 32 shots from the floor and made 13 (40.6 percent).
Schiphoff had five rebounds and three steals; Douma had four rebounds and two steals; Moriah Otto pulled down three rebounds; and Mutombo and Lindsey Van Es each had two rebounds.
• vs. MMCRU
H-M-S scored in double digits in three of the quarters against MMCRU, but that would not be enough to prevent a 63-41 loss on Jan. 24 in Hartley.
After the first quarter ended with H-M-S leading by one, 13-12, the Royals started a string of three straight quarters in which they would score 17 points. MMCRU led 29-24 at half time and extended the margin to 46-34 by the end of the third quarter.
Douma and Otto each scored 13 points, Schiphoff scored eight, Mutombo scored four and Knobloch scored three. H-M-S shot 28 percent from the field and 12-of-19 at the foul line.
Rebounding leaders were Otto with eight, Douma with six, and Haack and Mutombo with four. Schiphoff contributed two assists and two steals.

Hinton (2A No. 13) broke out to an early lead on H-M-S and cruised to an 87-31 win on Jan. 27 at Hinton.
The Blackhawks led by a 27-6 margin at the end of the first quarter and extended it 55-21 at the half. H-M-S was limited to 10 points in the second half while Hinton scored 32.
Scoring for H-M-S were Schiphoff with eight points, Knobloch with seven, Mutombo with four, and Haack and Mohni with three. Douma, Tewes and Van Es added two points each. The Hawks made just eight field goal attempts, and committed 35 turnovers.
