New seasons are about to begin

Wrestlers, basketball and bowling teams seek state berths

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn athletes are transitioning from the regular season to postseason competition in the coming week.

Okoboji/HMS wrestlers will compete in the Class 2A district tournament on Saturday, Feb. 11. The meet will be held at Estherville and begins at 10 a.m. Other competing schools will be Algona, Cherokee, Estherville-Lincoln Central, Forest City, Sheldon/South O'Brien, Spirit Lake Park and West Lyon.

First- and second-place finishers in each weight class qualify for the state wrestling championships at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Feb. 15-18.

Also on Saturday, H-M-S will play Emmetsburg in the opening round of the Class 2A Region 3 girls' basketball tournament. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. at Emmetsburg.

The winner advances to play Sibley-Ocheyedan (2A No. 3) at Sibley in the quarterfinal round on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 7 p.m.

H-M-S opens Class 1A boys' district tournament play against Alta-Aurelia on Monday, Feb. 13. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. at H-M-S High School. The winner advances to the district semifinal at St. Mary's High School in Remsen on Thursday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. The district final will also be played at Remsen on Tuesday, Feb. 21.

H-M-S bowling teams will compete in Class 1A state qualifying meets at Locomotion Lanes in Sanborn. The girls' meet is on Monday, Feb. 13 and the boys' is the following day. Both meets begin at 10 a.m. Other competing schools will be Emmetsburg (girls), North Iowa, OABCIG, Pocahontas Area, Sergeant Bluff-Luton (boys) and Shenandoah.

Teams will bowl 15 baker games. The team with top pin total will qualify for the state meet. Also, the four individuals with the highest three-game scores will qualify to compete at state.
