• Equipment damaged in fire
The Hartley Fire Department responded to a report of a power washer trailer on fire at 3029 White Avenue, northeast of Hartley. The fire occurred at approximately 11 a.m. on March 23.
A malfunction in a power washer being used to wash a hog building is suspected to be the cause of the fire, which also damaged the trailer. Both are reported to be totaled.
No injuries were reported. Firemen were on the scene for approximately 20 minutes.
• Arrested on several charges
During traffic stop in the 3200 mile of Highway 18 on March 24, a Clay County deputy reported that the female in the driver seat of the vehicle was not the person he saw driving. She and another occupant of the vehicle allegedly switched places after pulling over.
Heather Peterson, 45, of Hartley, was arrested and charged with Driving While Barred, an aggravated misdemeanor; and Failure to Display Registration Plate, No Insurance, Fraudulent Use of Registration, Operating a Non-registered Vehicle, No Driver's License, Open Container, Failure to File S.R. Insurance, Driving Under Suspension and Interference with Official Acts, all simple misdemeanors. She was released on bond.
• Operating while intoxicated
Trever Kuhlman, 37, of Everly, was stopped at 10:39 p.m. on March 25 at the Spencer North Y for excessive speed. The Clay County Sheriff's reported that Kuhlman admitted to consuming and an open, half-empty bottle of alcohol was observed on the passenger seat.
Kuhlman was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated-3rd Offense, a class D felony, Open Container and Excessive Speed. He was held in the Clay County Jail to appear before the magistrate.
• Driving while barred
Dillon Williams, 21, of Hartley, was stopped on March 24 at 140th Avenue and Highway 18 for a traffic violation. Upon investigation, the Clay County deputy found that Williams had a barred license.
He was arrested and charged with Driving While Barred, an aggravated misdemeanor; Driving Under Suspension, Failure to File S.R. Insurance, Operating a Non-registered Vehicle, Fraudulent Use of Registration and No Insurance, all simple misdemeanors. He was released on bond.
• Refuses to sign citation
A Clay County deputy stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation in the 2800 mile of Highway 18, at 11:37 a.m. on March 16. According to the report, the deputy attempted to issue a citation to Dennis Ball, 44, of Emmetsburg. He refused to sign it and advised he wanted to go to jail.
Ball was arrested and charged with Operation without Registration, a simple misdemeanor. He was held in jail to appear before the magistrate.
• Cited for driving under suspension
Austin Bell, 26, of Fostoria, was stopped by a Clay County deputy in Fostoria, at 8:26 a.m. on March 20. The report stated that Bell had a suspended driver's license.
He was arrested and charged with Driving Under Suspension, No Driver's License, No Insurance and Registration Violation, all simple misdemeanors. He was held to appear before the magistrate.
• 2 arrested on drug charges
While attempting to locate a subject for a civil service on March 20, a Clay County deputy smelled the odor of marijuana emanating from the residence. The deputy confronted the resident, Ashley Feather, 37, of Spencer, about the odor and called for assistance. Upon the arrival of the Spencer Police Department and sheriff's deputies, the residence and occupants were secured, and it was found that Feather had been smoking marijuana. She turned over her marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
Feather was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance-Marijuana, a serious misdemeanor; and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor. She was released on bond.
The sheriff's office also reported that during a stop for a traffic violation in the 1300 mile of Highway 18 at 6:06 p.m. on March 26, a deputy smelled the odor of marijuana emanating from a vehicle driven by Jesse Woock, 26, of Spencer. Further investigation located marijuana wax and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle.
Woock was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance-Marijuana (2nd offense), a serious misdemeanor; Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Failure to Yield Half of Roadway, both simple misdemeanors. He was released on bond.
• Numerous warrant arrests
Matthew Van Maanen, 30, was taken into custody at the Clay County Sheriff's Office on March 21, on an active warrant for Failure to Appear for Pretrial Conference-Original Charge Theft (2nd). Van Maanen was held in jail. Bond was set at $5,000 cash.
Duane'nisha Jackson, 23, was taken into custody on March 25 on an active warrant for Failure to Appear for an Arraignment on an original charge of Driving While Barred. Jackson was released on $2,000 bond.
Also taken into custody on March 25 was Javan Pierce, 46. He was arrested on a warrant for Assault. He was released on $300 bond.
Colburn Blazek, 46, was arrested on March 26 on an active warrant for Failure to Appear on the original charge of Driving Under Suspension. He was released on a $300 cash bond.
Cameron Brown, 23, was taken into custody on March 26 on an active warrant for Failure to Appear on the original charge of Driving Under Suspension. Brown was released on $300 bond.
