1998: Hartley Lions Club heads to Branson
• April 8, 1948
The offices of Mayor W.R. Wagner and Chamber of Commerce Secretary Ingwer L. Hansen were located in the Legion Hall, in a room vacated by Peoples Natural Gas. They relocated to the P.A. Leese building, formerly Rahn’s Market on the west side of Central Avenue.
The town council appointed R.C. Hoper to fill the unexpired term of A.F. Hansen as park commissioner. The park board announced that the Friday Club and the Hartley Fire Department had donated picnic tables. The Friday Club also planned to erect a fireplace at the park in the spring.
A group of Hartley Future Farmers was preparing for the District FFA Contest at Ida Grove. They were to compete in the Program of Work, Parliamentary Procedure and Public Speaking contests.
• April 5, 1973
After receiving a petition with signatures requesting that the stoplights on Central Avenue be repaired and used, the town council expressed the opinion that the replacement 4-way stop signs were safer.
A committee comprised of Gale Bobolz, Lyle Shinkle, Lacy Jackson, Mark Iverson and Rients Terpstra was appointed to investigate legal entities that could proceed with a rental housing project. Several individuals indicated interest in investing in some sort of rental housing venture.
A total of $58,491 had been raised as of March 31 for the fund drive to build an addition to Mann Memorial Wing. Several solicitors had not yet turned in their reports so the total raised was expected to get closer to the $100,000 goal.
• April 9, 1998
The Hartley Lions Club sponsored a Branson winter fun getaway. Twenty-five people from Hartley and other communities, including Lions Club President and bus driver Jerry Olson and Tour Director Bobbie Nutt, enjoyed the four-day trip. They made several stops along the way and enjoyed many shows while in Branson.
Housing projects in Hartley received funding commitments that assured they would go forward. The city entered into two loan agreements totaling $70,000 with Community Housing Initiatives for construction of the Hartland Apartment project in east Hartley.
The advisory committee for the development of the Homestead Cooperative received commitments from United Community Bank and Security State Bank for construction of the 12-unit complex to be located on a parcel of land directly south of the Hartley Community Center.
